During the launch of this project, Water and Sanitation Minister, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane said the days of water shortages, long queues at water points and hours spent trying to find water in the Jozini area will soon be gone. “The UMkhanyakude district municipality, together with all municipalities under the district, is one of the districts that the Department of Water and Sanitation working together with the provincial government will ensure that the district has access to clean water. The community of Jozini has individuals hence government has recognised the need to ensure that access to clean water is available. The previous government did not recognise black people, rather to use water for sugar plantations around this area. So today, we are coming to present to you in action that South Africa belongs to all that lives in it” said Mokonyane. The R1.1 billion water treatment plant is to ultimately supply potable water to a population of 16,200 households. The water treatment plant has the capacity of treating 40Ml/day of polished water. The water treatment works supply extends to the areas north of Jozini, and the south boundaries of the Ingwavuma town in the north KZN. The western border is formed by the Pongolapoort Dam and the Swaziland border, Bhekindoda, Gwaliweni, Lebombo, Machobeni, Magugu, Mombeni, Mthonjeni, Ndabeni, Nondabuya, Ntabayengwe, Othobothini, Nyamazane, Posheni, Sihlangwini, Siweni, Yangweni and eZulwini. The plant will also be able to supply the areas South of Jozini and as far as UMhlabuyalingana Local Municipalities, but also extends southwards into the Big 5 False Bay Local Municipality.
