Photographs of paintings, dioramas, landscapes, and people depict the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area from its foundation through the 1980s. California State University, Dominguez Hills Acquisition Information The materials were donated to the California State University Archives at California State University, Dominguez Hills in September 2007 by Dr. Judson Grenier. The majority of these photographs were gathered for teaching purposes and research use. Some photographs and images are published in A Guide to Historic Places in Los Angeles County (Kendall/Hunt, 1978) by the History Team of the City of Los Angeles American Revolution Bicentennial Committee. Some of the photos were taken personally by Dr. Judson Grenier. Many of the historical photos were donated to the Bicentennial Guide project. As for the historic locations in South Central Los Angeles, these photographs were donated by historian/librarian Miriam Matthews. On behalf of the locations depicted, members of the Associated Historical Societies of Los Angeles County contributed with donations as well. Most of the color photographs were taken by Dr. Grenier for the 18-minute film Pueblo of Promise shown in the Sepulveda House Visitor’s Center Downtown Los Angeles. Additional photographs within this collection attributed to other institutions should contact those institutions directly for duplicates. Processing Information Collection processed by Veronica D’Aquino, 2008. [History or Biography] Judson A. Grenier was born in Indiana in 1930. He received his bachelor degree from the University of Minnesota in 1951 and his masters a year later from the University of California. In 1956 he began teaching at El Camino College in Torrance, California, while pursuing his doctorate in history at UCLA. After receiving his PhD, Dr. Grenier joined the original faculty of CSC Dominguez Hills in 1966 during its inception period. At Dominguez Hills, he served as first chairman of the history department and as a representative member of the college on the state academic senate. Dr. Grenier has been a consultant for many cities and school districts in Los Angeles County. Dr. Grenier is also a research associate at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History and his works and contributions have been published in history books, historical societies serials, and journals such as California History, the Southern California Quarterly , and Manhattan Beach historical series publications. Among his many honors, he received the CSUDH University Advisory Board’s Distinguished Community Service Award. Scope and Content INVENTORY OF THE JUDSON "Consult repository." 2 GRENIER PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION, 1870-1980 The materials of this collection contain primarily photographs depicting general city views of the Los Angeles Metropolitan area: residences, buildings, parks, universities, museums, points of historic interest as well as events and scenes from every day life to the1980s. Many of these photos were either published in A Guide to Historic Places in Los Angeles County (Kendall/Hunt, c1978) and the Manhattan Beach historical series publication , or belong to Dr. Grenier’s academic project African American Related Sites & Images while additional images were used for the 18-minute film Pueblo of Promise, which can be seen at the Sepulveda House Visitor’s Center, in Downtown Los Angeles. A majority of the collection includes 8” x 10” black and white photographs, but also includes color photos, colorized cards, and oversize prints. This collection has been organized into four series according to Dr. Grenier’s publications and intellectual contributions and one additional series which gathers oversized prints and miscellaneous items. Historical Places and Sites in Los Angeles County 1870s-1970s Physical Description: 203 photographs Scope and Content Note This series consists mostly of 8”x10” black and white photographs featuring Los Angeles County including cities such as San Pedro, Torrance, and Pasadena. Most images depict public buildings, parks, theaters, churches, universities, hotels, aerial views, and events such as the Los Angeles Harbor dredging operations (ca. 1910), the 1910 Los Angeles Times Building bombing, and the doughboys arrival to Los Angeles after WWI. Many of these photographs are published in A Guide to Historic Places in Los Angeles County (Kendall/Hunt, c1978) and this series is organized following the topical and map zone arrangement given in the guide.
