ILLINOIS DIVERSITY COUNCIL PRESENTS 4th Annual Illinois Women’s Conference WHEN AMERICA SUCCEEDS, WOMEN SUCCEED Wednesday, April 24, 2013 8:00 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. The DoubleTree by Hilton Chicago, Illinois Sponsored by: Congratulations, Chris Rother! Named, 2013 Most Powerful and Infl uential Woman of Illinois by the National Diversity Council 138742 WELCOME FROM THE NATIONAL DIVERSITY COUNCIL Congratulations, Chris Rother! Named, 2013 Most Powerful and DENNIS KENNEDY Infl uential Woman Founder & CEO, National Diversity Council of Illinois Greetings, by the National Diversity Council I would like to welcome you to the Fourth Annual Illinois Women’s Conference. This year’s theme is “When America Succeeds, Women Succeed.” Our goal is to not only focus on the achievement of women in leadership positions, but to discuss the challenges they’ve overcome and the opportunities they’ve capitalized on in order to be successful. As we move toward the future, it is clear that women will be a cornerstone to how successful business is conducted. It is my hope that the Illinois Women’s Conference can be a place for women to learn essential skills necessary to achieve greatness. The conference is a statewide event focusing on professional development, community, networking, entrepreneurship and women’s health. This event gives women a tremendous opportunity to grow, develop, learn and make connections. Additionally, the conference lends itself to be a statewide dialogue for Women in Illinois. Each community is unique. Creating dialogue that is centered on diversity and inclusion is both healthy and important to issues specific to the Chicago community. I would like to thank our Board members and sponsors for their support. I would also like to thank our speakers who have provided their insight and wisdom so our audience can leave equipped to succeed. Granholm was elected governor of Michigan 2002. In 2006, she was re-elected with the largest number of votes ever cast for governor in Michigan. As Governor, Granholm led the state through a brutal economic downturn that resulted from a meltdown in the automotive and manufacturing sectors. She worked relentlessly to diversify the state’s economy, strengthen its auto industry, preserve the manufacturing sector, and add new, emerging sectors, such as clean energy, to Michigan’s economic portfolio. Granholm revolutionized Michigan, not only laying the infrastructure for a new Detroit, but transforming a once-suffering state into a model for the future of America. Her management of Michigan’s economic crisis serves as a reminder that real innovation is born from hitting rock bottom. Governor Granholm is a Distinguished Practitioner of Law and Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. As a Senior Advisor to The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Clean Energy Program, Granholm leads a national campaign that promotes clean energy policies that create jobs, stimulate innovation, spur investment, and enhance America’s competitiveness in the global clean energy race. A native Canadian, Granholm is the recipient of the Canadian American Bar Association’s 2011 John D. Lawson Award which recognizes attorneys who have made an outstanding contribution to the law or legal scholarship. Granholm is a regular contributor to NBC’s political talk show, Meet the Press and writes a bi-weekly column for Politico.com. Previously, she hosted The War Room with Jennifer Granholm on Current TV. Granholm is an honors graduate of both the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard Law School. She and her husband, Daniel G. Mulhern, have three children. 5 W OM A N OF THE Y E A R PAT HARRIS Global Chief Diversity Officer, McDonald’s Sometimes a boss recognizes something in an employee that they themselves haven’t yet discovered and that’s how Pat Harris came to the work of diversity and inclusion.“Initially I don’t think I was necessarily inspired,” Harris says. But Mel Hopson, McDonald’s Corporation’s first diversity officer, was convincing in his message that the role was a good fit for Harris and that McDonald’s would benefit for having her in it.“Needless to say, D&I leadership became my passion at the personal and organizational levels.” Today, Harris is an expert in the field of diversity and inclusion, but thinks back on a time when it was all very new. Coming out of the world of human resources, her familiarity with the adversities associated with a leadership role helped her navigate many early roadblocks. These obstacles “made me stronger and actually smarter,” Harris says. “I became totally dedicated to the work of D&I, understanding that this is a journey and we will always be confronted with challenges. The secret sauce is ‘persistence’— never give up and be ready to take risks,” Harris says. Diversity and inclusion is a journey that Harris gladly leads for McDonald’s Corporation as Global Chief Diversity Officer. She develops and implements diversity strategies throughout 33,500 restaurants in 119 countries. During her tenure, McDonald’s has earned recognition for its inclusion and diversity efforts from major publications like Fortune Magazine, Black Enterprise Magazine, Latina Style Magazine, Asian Enterprise Magazine and Worklife Matters magazine. Taking diversity and inclusion global through McDonald’s Corporation’s Global Women’s Initiative was a tremendous learning experience for Harris. By sharing stories and helping new leaders, Harris is empowering people across the globe. Harris’ work is ensuring that diversity and inclusion will always be a part of the fabric at McDonald’s. Harris documented her D&I journey thus far at McDonald’s in her book, None of Us is As Good As All of Us: How McDonald’s Prospers by Embracing Inclusion and Diversity. Her focus is a global focus, seeking to develop the appropriate tools and resources to take each area of the world to a new level of understanding diversity and inclusion. There is work to be done all over the world. There are people who do not understand diversity and inclusion, but are open and willing to learn. Perhaps there is no greater joy in her work than when she is coaching someone at the remedial level of understanding of D&I. Harris says, “Seeing the light bulbs come on motivates me.” 6 M I S TRE ss OF C EREMONY LAUREN JIGGETTS Reporter, NBC5 Lauren Jiggetts is an anchor and reporter for NBC 5 News.
