(4) Aerial Reconnaissance: The following is a report of observations made by the 2/6 and 3/6 Squadrons, French. Air Force on aerial reconnaissance ll0~30A March to lll730A March 1945. · · ·· VENTIMIGLIA (VS8787) to SAN REMO (VT 0089)--Nothiri·g on·the road or railroad. Large craters were ~een 600 yards W of CAPE NERO vic (-VS 953877), and the railroad tracks were cut at this point. NERVIA River Valley--No. activity observed. CUNEO (VN 8754) t'o CENTALLO (VN 9166)--0n the railroad, 20 pass'enger oars of an old type ~ere observed which seemed to be in poor condition. , CUNEO (VN 8754) to BUSCA. (VN 8369)--The 60 railway cars first observed on 7 March, two miles N of CUNEO, are no longer there. CUNEO (VN 8754) to SALUZZO (YN 8582)--0n the roads in this area were observed many bicycles and loaded trucks going in both directions. Nearly all or · the bicyclists seen were in groups of 5 or 6, there were no groups as' small as two or as llirge as 'bnelve. - 1 - .. BRA (VO 1386)--0ut of the 70 railway cars that were first observed on 8 March, only 15 now remain. BRA (VO 1386) to FOSSANO (VO 0271) to MONDOVI (VO 0952)--Many carts that were apparently heavily loaded going in both directions. When the planes approached the horses were dispersed but the carts were left on the roads. MONDOVI (VO . 0952)--In the railroad station were 15 flat cars loaded with wood and 5 or 6 empty cars. 3. UISCELLANEOUS: a. PW's taken during period: None. Total to date--77. b. Enemy casualties: None known. c. OSS Reports. (See attached Incl #1). d. Weather: ~/foderately cold, clear. ( 2) VAL NERVIA: German batterie~ of the VAL NERVIA have returned to their former positions during the last few days. (Date of Information: 7 March 1945). (3) ROCCHETTA (88698): (a) German bat teries have returned to their former positions during the last few days. (Date of Information: 7 March 1945). (b) Aerial bombardment hit German shelter at PRA DI GOTTE (ROCCHETTA). Effectives of 60 men were all killed. (4) P01ITE BARBAIRA (S-880952)~ 149 m/m battery had to withdraw following bombardments. (5) BORDIGHERA ( :: -9185) AREA: (a) Very heavy traffic in horse-drawn vehio1es at night carrying food supplies and ammunition towards VAL NERVIA. Traffic begins when night falls going on until dawn. App 200 meters between each truck. Artillery fire against these convoys ineffective. Only objectives hit: center of BORDIGHERA. Objectives shouJ be road section between Piazza d' armi of VALLECROSIA at S-885867 and PONTE DE NERV_ (S-880871) and at irregular intervals in order that the moment of firing cannot be foreseen. Intensive fire requested. (b) CAPO NERO (S-965869): Naval bombardment against armored train unsuc­ cessful. Points of impact: crest and village of COLDIRODI (S-9689). NEW WEAPONS: Germans have been seen between BORGETTO and VALLEBONA (S-8990) in training wit: new weapon, presumably AT, never seen before. It is an individual weapon firing like a rifle, caliber app 80 m/m. Great efficiency against pillboxes and AT. Ver: deafening noise caused by the firing. (Edit note: Description resembles German Bazooka, 11 Panzerwerfer", which may not as yet have appeared in this region). Ref.
