Final List George Floyd

Final List George Floyd

The below collection of data is one of three key elements in Mapping a Moment, a project created by the Cleveland based musical duo the Baker’s Basement. Mapping a Moment was crafted after a long journey across America and beyond in the weeks immediately following the murder of George Floyd. The full presentation includes these 3 parts: 1. A written reflection on the response of Americans in public spaces during a time of crisis 2. A five and a half minute video illustrating this reflection through song, image, and an animated map displaying the occurrence of demonstrations across America 3. The below spreadsheet containing data on over 1600 public demonstrations that occurred from May 25, 2020 to June 13, 2020 in the United States and throughout the international community. To see all three parts of Mapping a Moment, go here: www.thebakersbasement.com/mapping-a-moment To see the full video of the murder of George Floyd, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaGmz4DPlJw&app=desktop&bpctr=1596415559 Summary of Data: The spreadsheet below contains data on a large portion of the public demonstrations held in response to the murder of George Floyd in the weeks immediately following his death (From May 25, 2020 to June 13, 2020). It was collected to help provide a wider understanding of how people in the United States and the international community initially reacted through a variety of public demonstrations. This data was used to construct the animated map presented in the video & song portion of Mapping a Moment - Youtube. This is not to be considered a complete list of the demonstrations that occurred during that time period, but an effort to create a fuller picture of how the USA and the international community reacted in public spaces. For the purposes of this presentation, the word “demonstration” represents a wide variety of public gatherings. Examples: Vigils, Protests, Moments of Silence, Marches, etc. Please review the linked sources in the spreadsheet if you’d like to see what type of demonstration occurred in a given location. Each line in this spreadsheet provides the following general details for each demonstration as indicated by the below headers: • Country • State • County / Parish / Borough • City • Date of the Demonstration • Estimated Attendance - presented in these increments (and represented by matching red markers displayed in the video/animated-map portion of Mapping a Moment): • Source of Information - listed as a hyperlink • Nature of the Demonstration - organized under 1 of the 3 general labels detailed below** Peaceful: Demonstrations that involved no violence, injury, destruction of property, looting, or clashes with police. Largely Peaceful: Peaceful events with minimal/isolated incidents of violence and/or minor vandalism. No physical altercations or clashes with police. Clashes: This label represents a wide range of circumstances under which public demonstrations led to or involved one or more of the following: violence; vandalism; injury; destruction of property; arson; and/or clashes with police and other law enforcement officials. For some demonstrations, “Clashes” means that a crowd was dispersed by police but with no incidents of property damage or looting. For others, it represents instances of buildings burned, storefront windows broken, injuries sustained, cars destroyed, and/or property looted. In many of the cities given the label “Clashes,” larger demonstrations remained peaceful throughout the day and came to a specified end, after which crowds largely dispersed leaving only a small fraction of people that clashed with police and/or caused damages. In most instances, demonstrations with this label were peaceful until nightfall. In regard to police and demonstrators clashing in some cities, the “clashes” label is not intended to make a determination on how tensions escalated among all parties present. In other words, many accounts show moments of demonstrators directing rocks, bottles, fireworks, and other items at police, just as many accounts show police using flash grenades, rubber bullets, tear gas, and other crowd control methods against demonstrators. For a better understanding of how any specific demonstration unfolded to involve destruction and violence, please review the listed sources and/or explore other media sources that may provide additional angles and insight. Please note that police and local officials were present at the majority of these public gatherings; local governments and city or county police units should be able to answer questions and confirm information about public gatherings and protests held in their respective locations. **Minneapolis: For the date range of May 25 to June 2, the “Nature of Event” column listed for Minneapolis is intended to provide a general summary of how events unfolded during the days immediately following the murder of George Floyd (rather than using one of the above three labels). Multiple sources are included for each of these dates to help provide an assortment of accounts on what unfolded; some of these sources contain detailed timelines within. 1 United States 50 States + Washington, D.C. + 5 US Territories Alabama State County City Date Attendance Source Nature of Event Alabama Marshall Albertville 6/6/20 100-500 https://www.waff.com/2020/06/06/hundreds-protesters-peacefully-march-albertville-high-school/ Peaceful https://www.annistonstar.com/news/anniston/local-protests-continue-after-george-floyd-s-death/article_d2ff18e2-a456-11ea-962e- Alabama Calhoun Anniston 6/1/20 ≤100 cfb98489f7d4.html Peaceful Alabama Clay Ashland 6/2/20 ≤100 https://www.wbrc.com/2020/06/02/peaceful-protest-held-ashland/ Peaceful Alabama Limestone Athens 5/31/20 ≤100 https://whnt.com/news/athens/dozens-rally-in-athens-to-demand-justice-for-george-floyd/ Peaceful https://www.oanow.com/news/local/watch-now-auburn-community-comes-together-for-peaceful-protest/article_99875f8e- Alabama Lee Auburn 6/2/20 100-500 e3e0-5ee8-91fa-5a08c3f66377.html Peaceful Alabama Jefferson Birmingham 5/30/20 500-1000 https://www.al.com/news/birmingham/2020/05/peaceful-protests-for-george-floyd-spread-across-alabama.html Clashes https://www.facebook.com/Chilton-County-Stand-Up-104243637985338/?
