Bradley Livingstone (9 years) Ellen Livingstone (6 years) January 2014 Sadly Bradley and Ellen were shot dead by their father, corrections worker, Edward Livingstone (51) in their Dunedin home. A neighbour tried in vain to save the children by attempting to wrestle the gun away from their father but tragically was unable to stop the incident. Edward had previously breached his protection orders twice and was discharged without conviction on both accounts. Honour Shamrock Ashworth (3 months) January 2014 Honour received serious injuries in his Invercargill home and later died in Starship hospital. Investigations are ongoing in this case. Rayner-Lee Soljar Thompson-Hatley (4 months) April 2013 Rayner-Lee was fatally injured in his Wairoa home. It is suspected he died of head injuries. Investigations are ongoing in this case and no chargers have been made at this time. New Born Baby Girl September 2012 A new born baby girl found deceased and wrapped in a towel by a Taita Drive resident in September 2012. The infant’s mother was charged with her manslaughter which was later changed to infanticide and finally all charges were dropped against her. Atreyu Taylor-Matene (1 year) July 2012 1 year old Atreyu died due to head injuries in his Whangarei home, investigation is ongoing and no charges have been made that we are aware of at this time. Leilani Mary Jane Lotonu'u-Lorigan (2 years) June 2012 Leilani died in her Manurewa home from septicemia from two ruptures in her bowel. Her step father Michael Martin was charged with her murder but found not guilty. His defence claimed his innocence and suggested it must have been her mother Amy Lorigan. Hinekawa Topia (2 months) January 2012 2 month old Hinekawa Topia died in Whanganui from what is believed to be a non-accidental head injury. She was a triplet. Thomas Tamatea Ariki-Nui McGregor, 31, her father was sentenced to a minimum non parole period of 17 yrs imprisonment for her murder. 2 | P a g e w w w . 4 t h e k i d z . o r g . n z James Joseph Ruhe Lawrence (2 years) November 2011 JJ, as he has become known died at his home at Takitimu St, Orakei. He had sustained blows that had caused significant damage to his internal organs. Joel Loffley, 29, unemployed, of Mangere, was charged with the manslaughter of JJ. He was the boyfriend of JJ’s mother. He was subsequently sentenced to a minimum of no less than 19 years. Jade Bayliss (13 years) November 2011 Jade was found murdered in her burning Somerfeid home. She was home sick from school when it is alleged that Jeremy McLaughlin, 34 entered the home assaulted and murdered Jade, burgled the residence and then set it alight. He had been in a relationship with Jade’s mother whom at the time had not known that Jeremy had killed before and had a history of violence. Their relationship had come to an end 3 weeks prior to Jade’s death. He was jailed for a minimum non parole period of 23 years for criminal harassment of her mother, murder, arson and burglary. Jolon Sweeney a 40 yo man is also facing charges as an accessory after the fact. Terepo Taura-Griffiths(1 year) November 2011 Just one week prior to JJ’s death another toddler died in Otahuhu in suspicious circumstances. He died in Starship hospital on November 6th with horrific head injuries. He was in the care of his godparents at the time. His 32yo godmother Mariam Filihia was charged with his murder. Hayden Miles (15 years) August 2011 27 yo Gavin John Gosnell has been charged with the murder of Hayden. A 35 yo male and 18 yo female have also been charged in connection with his robbery and death. Hayden disappeared while in CYFS care, it is believed he was robbed then murdered. His remains were found in December at the Ruru Lawn Cemetery in Linwood. Gavin John Gosnell was jailed for 18 years for the murder and dismemberment of the 15-year-old. Kororia Matthews-Poumako (14 months) April 2011 A 14-month-old girl died at the hands of her mother, who was seeking help for substance abuse. Kataraina Te Iti Matthews, 33, and Kororia Matthews-Poumako, 14 months, were found dead at a flat on Dominion Rd, in Mt Roskill. Serenity-Jay Scott- Dinnington (6 months) April 2011 Serenity-Jay Scott-Dinnington was admitted to hospital after an "incident" at the Havelock Rd house where she lived with her mother. Her life support was switched off at Starship Hospital yesterday afternoon, and she died at 4.35pm surrounded by family members. A post-mortem examination confirmed the little girl's injuries were not accidental. Matthew Ellery the boyfriend of mother Chelsea Scott was charged with Serenity’s murder. 3 | P a g e w w w . 4 t h e k i d z . o r g . n z Mikara Ranui Jarius Reti (5 months) January 2011 Trent Owen Ngaruhe Hapuku 21, is accused of killing a five-month-old boy was found trying to play a PlayStation game as the baby was dying on his shoulder. The baby lived with his mother, Jamie Reti, two-year-old brother and Hapuku in a sleepout behind a house in Kingsley Drive, Flaxmere. A pathologist's report found the baby was also suffering from healing fractures to his ribs that were estimated as being between a week and a fortnight old. Hapuku somehow caused critical blunt-force injury to the baby's liver, severing it, and fracturing four of his ribs. The injury to the liver probably resulted from it being crushed internally against the baby's spinal column, police say. Sahara Jayde Baker-Koro (5 years) December 2010 Kerry Ratana, 24, who had been living at the house with Sahara but not related to her, was charged with sexual violation and her manslaughter. The abuse occurred between December 18 and 21. Ratana had been in court a few months earlier convicted and discharged of a minor disorderly charge. "I want you to write to me in 12 months and tell me how wonderful your life is," Judge Clapham said. Sahara was found dead in her home later that same year. Seini Unaloto Ikamanu (3 years) December 2010 Seini was taken to Starship Hospital after an incident at her Beachhaven home on 24 March. She spent her third birthday in a coma and died on December 6. A man has been charged with causing her injuries, grievous bodily harm and also failing to provide the necessities of life. He has been remanded on bail and to reappear at the High court July 2011 when a trial date will be finalised. Cezar Taylor (6 months) July 2010 Cezar's injuries were consistent with "shaking and blunt force trauma, which is a blow to the head" and appeared to have happened over a period of time. Cezar’s stepfather, James Allan Hemana, 30, also known as James Sylva, has been charged with assaulting the baby. The family were also known to Cyfs and the assault occurred between visits with the family. Anna Sangha (2 years) June 2010 Deepak Nagpal 24, was sentenced to a minimum sentence of 20 years after the double murder of Anna and her mother. He was boarding with the family and after being asked to leave he stabbed the mother more than 100 times, chased Anna 2, down and stabbed her 10 times then put her in a washing machine with various items and put it on a wash cycle. Karl Perigo-Check Junior (30 months) October 2009 After wetting himself while sleeping Karl received two broken ribs which punctured his lung. After going to the toilet he was kicked several times eventually splitting his pancreas on his spine, a vein divided and Karl died shortly afterwards. Rikki Ngatai-Check, 23, had been in a secret relationship with Karl's mother Lilah McGregor and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non parole period of 17 years. 4 | P a g e w w w . 4 t h e k i d z . o r g . n z Hail-Sage McClutchie (22 months) September 2009 Hail-Sage died in the early hours of September 27 after being taken to Waikato Hospital with serious head injuries the night before. It is believed she sustained her injuries while at a house in Morrinsville. Police confirmed that the 22 month old’s death was homicide but no one will be charged with the crime.
