From New York City to San Francisco: Water and the Great American Experiment

From New York City to San Francisco: Water and the Great American Experiment 12 June - 11 July 2016 10 ECTS Have you ever wondered how New York City provides clean water to nearly 9 million people, or considered how farmers coax Gardens of Eden from parched desert soils? During this month-long excursion across the United States, you will learn how water has shaped and been shaped by the growth of this young, enterprising nation. Follow in the footsteps of countless westward migra- tions and experience American history and culture as it unfolds from the Atlantic to the Pacific. During the compulsory preparatory spring seminar and the trip itself, you will help plan the route, research the destinations, document our journey via a blog and photo/video, and participate in intercultural exchanges. This trip isn’t for the faint-hearted. A Green Tortoise bus will be our home and our office for the month: we will discuss the next stop or even play cards as we travel, and then convert the bus to Alpine hut-like sleep- ing quarters for the night. To take part, you must have a keen sense of humor, a spirit for adventure and a strong sense of team work! Estimated cost: 3,000 CHF. Travel to and from the US is not included. Trip leaders: Prof. Dr. Rolf Weingartner and Erin Gleeson For any questions and to apply, send a short motivation letter toProf. Dr. Rolf Weingartner by 17 October. The letter should explain why you want to participate, what you hope to gain and how you will contribute to the success of the trip. Please also describe the status and topic of your MSc thesis. You will receive a decision from us by 28 October; final commitments and an initial 1,000 CHF deposit are needed by 6 November. .
