Faith in Education Mercure Holland House Hotel, Cardiff, Thursday 23 June 2011, 10.15am – 3.00pm Event Programme 09.30 Registration 10.15 Welcome and introductions Event opened by Matthew Murray (BBC Wales News), handing over to Archbishop George Stack and Archbishop Barry Morgan for opening prayers and to set the scene for the day and introduce the Minister 10.30 Keynote address by Leighton Andrews AM, Minister for Education and Skills, introducing the document ‘Faith in Education’ 10.45 Questions to the Minister and a panel of 'faith educators' Leighton Andrews AM, Archbishop Barry Morgan (Archbishop of Wales), Revd Aled Edwards OBE (Chief Executive of Cytun, Churches Together in Wales), Oona Stannard (Chief Executive and Director of the Catholic Education Service for England and Wales), Bishop Edwin Regan (Bishop of Wrexham) 11.15 Coffee break 11.30 Presentations from Anglican, Roman Catholic and Community schools: • Anglican Secondary School (The Bishop of Llandaff CW High School) with a focus on ALN and specific learning needs of children with Autism • Catholic Primary School (Our Lady’s RC Primary School, Bangor) with a focus on serving a culturally diverse community. • Community Schools: schools and the local faith community in Bridgend are working in partnership to address issues of faith, community and its impact on school values. The presentations will pick up themes around faith community involvement in education in Wales, reflecting on the nature and extent of statutory and non- statutory involvement in different parts of Wales. Responses from delegates will be gathered electronically from table discussions, with key points and themes of discussion fed back during the session. 12.40 St Mary the Virgin Church in Wales Primary School, Cardiff: a song before lunch! 12.45 Buffet Lunch 13.30 Pupil voices Personal views from pupils at St John Baptist Church in Wales High School, Aberdare and St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School, Barry 13.40 Presentations: Opportunities and challenges to faith communities in Wales, in the light of devolution and the current challenge to raise school standards in Wales. A series of short presentations will focus on data and other evidence gathered across Wales, considering • the impact of faith on learning • the challenge to faith communities for the future in Church schools and throughout the system in Wales Contributors: • Revd Edwin Counsell, Education Adviser for the Church in Wales: Outcomes and challenges for the Church in Wales • Dr David Ellis: Introducing initial findings from his analysis of outcomes for Church schools from the last Estyn inspection cycle • Peter Irvine, Catholic Education Service for England and Wales: The distinctive contribution of Catholic schools in Wales • Vincent McDonnell, Managing Director of ‘Prospects’: Professional development and succession planning in Welsh schools 14.20 Table discussion 14.45 Feedback • Summary of main themes of feedback • Overview of main issues raised through the day. • Feedback from tables 15.00 Close Blog: this will draw together a variety of opinion and comment from faith leaders, politicians and educators, considering their role in developing the links between faith and education in Wales. The blog should also explore some of the issues that will drive discussion on the day, as well as a variety of hopes and aspirations for the event and it's follow up. It will run after the event, developing views and opinions on matters relating to faith and education in Wales, while providing a useful repository of comment and views. [email protected] Table discussions and live feedback: there will be a live panel to take questions on the day as part of the first session, although the majority of comment and discussion will focus on the groups at their tables. Each table will have a networked tablet computer to feed in comment and reaction during the event, which can be collated into live feedback on the main screen during the event. This will also form the basis for interim and final plenary. .
