Professor Winston is a Scientist who pioneered early work with IVF to help thousands of couples with fertility problems to become pregnant. He has also presented many documentaries and is a peer in the House of Lords. During the day Professor Winston spoke to a large group of our Year 9 students along with students from Haileybury and The Sele School in Hertford. Professor Winston also met with a small group of Year 10 students, answered questions from our Sixth form Science students and formally opened our new labs, which were refurbished over the summer break. One student said “it was an inspiring session where we got to hear from a real Scientist about how technology has developed and the importance of team work”. Spanish students visit Madrid During half-term Miss Gibbs, Mr Williams and Mr Lindquist travelled to Spain’s capital with 31 students after waking up bright and early for their 7.00am flight. After landing they made the most of the day by doing a walking tour and exploring the centre of the city. On the second day they visited the home of the Real Madrid football team, the Bernabéu stadium. The students found it awe-inspiring to be in such a big place and the museum was very interesting. They then visited the beautiful Royal Palace in Madrid, the biggest in Europe measured by square feet. The third day was a visit to the ‘Las Ventas’ Bull Ring, with many unsure of their views about the sport. After listening to the history and tradition behind bull fighting, they came away with a new-found respect for it at least. On the final day they visited the Retiro Park and then the ‘Museo del Prado’, one of the most famous art museums in the world with some free time in the centre of Madrid for lunch and to explore the city before the journey home. Thank you to Miss Gibbs, Mr Williams and Mr Lindquist for organising and leading the trip. HT Community remembers On 11th November staff and students observed a two minute silence at our remembrance service in honour of all those who served and lost their lives in the First World War and every conflict since. #LestWeForget #ArmisticeDay Year 8 trip to WW1 Battlefields in France and Belgium Year 8 students got up early on Friday 22nd November and took the ferry to France for the start of their trip. First stop of the day was Langermark German Cemetery and then onto “Tyne Cot” where the students laid a wreath, read a poem and held a minute’s silence for the fallen. The busy day ended with the last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate to honour the missing. The next day was another early start to visit the area of the Somme, visiting Newfoundland Memorial, Thiepval Memorial and finally Lochnagar Crater. Students and staff then caught the ferry home Saturday evening after a very busy, insightful and enjoyable trip. Thank you Miss Kaposi, Miss Allingham and Mr Lindquist for arranging and leading the trip. Year 8 Geography Volcanoes House Competition Well done to all the Year 8 students that entered Geography House competition on volcanoes.
