Seven species of 4 genera belonging to Otitinae (Diptera: Ulidiidae) were identified. Four species [Dorycera caucasica Hendel, 1910; Ceroxys urticae (Linnaeus, 1758); Herina lugubris (Meigen, 1826); and Otites formosa (Panzer, 1798)] are new records for the Turkish fauna. The distributions of these species are mapped. In addition, wing photographs of species given in this study are provided. Key words: Diptera, Ulidiidae, Otitinae, new records, Turkey 1. Introduction provided general information, drawings, and keys for the The family Ulidiidae belongs to the superfamily Ulidiidae. In the most recent research about the Turkish Tephritoidea. The Otitinae are variously colored flies, Ulidiidae, Kameneva and Korneyev (2012) identified the ranging from dull gray to shiny brown (Figures 1a–1h). new species of Herina lazi from Trabzon. There are few Otitinae can be diagnosed as mostly dull gray to shiny studies about the Turkish Ulidiidae and only 8 species brown or black flies with vein 1R setulose or rarely bare, from this family are known from Turkey. and a spinulose (rarely bare) phallus. Female abdominal sternites 4–6 with anterior apodemes (Kameneva and 2. Materials and methods Korneyev, 2006). Adults are generally found on plants In this study, 40 females and 33 males belonging to (living and dead) and excrement. Some species prefer Dorycera, 18 females and 18 males belonging to Otites, 2 damp and marsh-like places. The larvae generally eat females and 3 males belonging to Ceroxys, and 19 females feces (Hennig, 1939) and decomposing material, as well as and 26 males belonging to Herina, in total 159 specimens, living plant tissue (Foote, 1976). were collected in Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Denizli, Hatay, In the Palearctic Region, there are 137 species Isparta, Karaman, Kastamonu, Kayseri, Kırklareli, Kırşehir, belonging to 19 genera of the family Ulidiidae (Soós, Kocaeli, Konya, Mersin, Muğla, Niğde, Osmaniye, Sivas, 1984; Kameneva, 2012; Kameneva and Korneyev, 2012; Uşak, and Yozgat between 1992 and 2006 by the second Namin and Kameneva, 2013; Morgulis, 2013; Morgulis et author (Figures 2a–2g). al., 2013; Morgulis and Freidberg, 2014). In the catalogue Specimens were collected from diverse areas of Palearctic Diptera, there are 7 species from 2 genera characterized by different geographical and climatic of Ulidiidae known from Turkey. These are Dorycera features and by habitats with different elevations. They graminum (Fabricius, 1794), Dorycera judea (Hendel, were collected by using a sweeping net (40 cm in diameter). 1908), Dorycera maculipennis (Macquart, 1843), Dorycera The specimens were identified according to related nitida (Hendel, 1910), Dorycera persica (Hennig, 1939), literature (Hennig, 1939; Kameneva, 1996; Merz, 1996, Dorycera pictipennis (Hennig, 1939), and Otites caph (Loew, 2002). Distribution of species was based on the studies 1854). In the Palearctic region, Hennig (1939) conducted of Hennig (1939) and Soós (1984). For taking wing one of the most comprehensive studies on Ulidiidae. In his photographs, wings were placed between a cover glass and study, Hennig discussed genera and species and gave the a microscope slide. Photos were then taken with a digital definition of species, identification keys, and characteristic camera using a stereomicroscope. All specimens are kept figures used in identification. Additionally, Merz (1996) at the Zoology Museum of Gazi University (ZMGU). * Correspondence: [email protected] 1090 MESCİ and HASBENLİ / Turk J Zool Figure 1.
