Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor, and in 2017 Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to play the role. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally. Each actor's portrayal is unique, but all represent stages in the life of the same character, and together, they form a single lifetime with a single narrative. The time- travelling feature of the plot means that different incarnations of the Doctor occasionally meet. "Guests of Madame Guillotine" Henric Hirsch Dennis Spooner 15 August 1964 ( 1964-08-15 ). But don't be fooled. With a chuckle and a twinkle in his eye, he has an unquenchable thirst to explore, and a knack of getting himself into trouble doing it. Sometimes doting, sometimes difficult, the First Doctor was both a loving father-figure and a fierce opponent. He plays deadly games with the Celestial Toymaker, he fools Roman emperors, mongol warlords and French revolutionaries, and he foils each and every machination of the evil Daleks. After preventing the Cybermen from absorbing the Earth's energy and with his body "wearing a bit thin", the First Doctor collapses to the TARDIS floor and begins to change. But that was not to be the end for the First Doctor. The original would return to team up with two of his successors to defeat renegade Time Lord, Omega, and then with three of his future selves to battle Lord President Borusa on Gallifrey, and then again with twelve of his regenerations in a bid to save their home planet from the Daleks in the Time War. Shockingly, we also discover that he also came into contact with the Twelfth Doctor in person. In short, Doctor Who is smart, fun, and endlessly creative. It has kept me entertained for over fifteen years, and my enthusiasm for it has barely waned. Science fiction is in a dumb rut right now, so you could do a lot worse than look back at this show, one of the genre's crowning achievements. Doctor Who ceased production in 1989, then resumed in 2005. The original series (1963–1989), generally consists of multi-episode serials; in the early seasons, and occasionally through its run, serials tend to link together, one story leading directly into the next. Introduced in 2007's "Blink," the Weeping Angels are a race of creatures that feed on potential energy. They appear as statutes, covering their eyes to avoid accidentally seeing one another. They exist in a quantum state and can't move if someone is looking at them. That's why it's so dangerous to close your eyes around them even for a second. Since their introduction, the Weeping Angels have become one of the most popular monsters introduced in the new iteration of the series. Classic Doctor Who has been available to stream on BritBox in the UK for almost three months, but if you're not a dyed-in-the-wool fan, or perhaps more familiar with the modern version of the sci-fi series, then perusing the vast amount of content now available to you might feel a little overwhelming. So, just who is Doctor Who, you ask? Well, the first thing to know is that the character is actually known as the Doctor (otherwise unnamed), as opposed to ever being called Doctor Who, which is simply the name of the long-running series. The Doctor comes from a planet called Gallifrey and those of his highly advanced species are known as Time Lords. The Doctor rejected the boring oligarchy of his people, however, and went rogue with his stolen TARDIS (more on this magnificent machine later). Despite looking the same, his people are biologically a bit different than human beings. They have two hearts, and among their most fascinating abilities is their power of regeneration. When a Time Lord dies (assuming the circumstances aren't too extreme), he or she is born again in a new body. Peter Davison had the unenviable task of following Tom Baker, and he often seems like he's trying to go to the opposite extreme from Baker's Doctor— more vulnerable, less of a know-it-all. He also seems like an old man trapped in a young man's body, something Matt Smith has been doing as well. In a lot of Davison's stories, the more vulnerable thing means the Doctor is awfully passive, causing the storytelling to grind to a halt.
