June 8th - By: Bruce Bennett Wenatchee 7, Yakima Valley 1 last night. Wenatchee at Yakima Valley 5:05 today. Gonzaga Univ. AppleSox in 2012. AppleSox to Mariner The Cole Gillespie you see see in the Mariners’ outfield on occasion and the one you rooted for at Paul Thomas Sr. Baseball Stadium 11 seasons ago are one in the same. Gillespie was brought up to Seattle from the Tacoma Rainiers on April 24 by manager Lloyd McClendon “to try and add some balance to a lefty dominated lineup.” He has been used sparingly and got off to a slow start. That is until his last 10 games. Yesterday he led off the Mariners scoring with his first home run of the season and is batting a very healthy .381 over those 10 outings. The former Oregon State player has had brief stints with four major league clubs over the past five years. He got in 45 games with theArizona Diamondbacks in 2010 and five more the following season. He spent 2012 in AAA ball and came back last season for three games for the Chicago Cubs and 28 for the San Francisco Giants. He now has 21 appearances with Seat- tle and his next game will be his 100th in the majors. Gillespie was a member of the 2004 “big bopper” AppleSox. That outfit put the lumber on the horsehide. Of the 14 Wenatchee teams, the ‘04 Sox rank as follows based on averages per game – hits 1st, singles 1st, doubles 2nd, triples 2nd, home runs tied for 1st, extra base hits 1st, total bases 1st, runs 1st, on base percentage 1st, stolen base percentage 1st and batting average 1st. Eight players hit above .300. Gillespie was first on the team in batting average .398, first in slugging percentage .610, first in on base percentage .493, first in runs 36, second in hits 49, first in RBI7, 2 third in doubles 9, first in home runs 5, second in total bases 75 and first in walks 23. June 8 Games This has been a good day for Wenatchee. On the eighth of June they are 7-1 overall, 4-0 in league games, 3-0 on the road and have a four-game winning streak. Standings East: Wenatchee 1-1,Yakima Valley 1-1, Kelowna 1-1, Walla Walla 1-1 West: Cowlitz 2-0, Kitsap 2-0, Bellingham 1-1, Victoria 1-1, South: Bend 1-1, Corvallis 1-1, Medford 0-2, Klamath Falls 0-2.
