DIVISION I 113 Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I 2002 Championships OUTDOOR TRACK Edited by Scott Deitch. Highlights LSU at Home in Track: LSU became the first host institution to win the team title in the championships in nearly 20 years May 29-June 1. A third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay, the meet’s final event, cemented the Tigers’ first championship since 1990 and fourth overall. LSU finished with 64 points, followed by defending champion Tennessee with 57. Oregon in 1984 was the last school to win at its own facility. Most of the Tigers’ winning margin was the result of the two relays. LSU outscored the Volunteers, 16-10, in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays. The champion’s Walter Davis won both the long jump and the triple jump, repeating his 2001 victory in the latter. In addition, Davis joined with Robert Parham, Pete Coley and Bennie Brazell to win the 400-meter relay.
