(1993) developed SPI for the purpose of defining and monitoring the drought in the United States. • Western Regional Climate Center, Colorado Climate Center, and National Drought Mitigation Center use SPI to monitor current status of drought in the United States. 3/21/2017 7 SPI Cont’d.. 3/21/2017 8 SPI Cont’d… 3/21/2017 9 SPI Cont’d… 3/21/2017 10 SPI Cont’d… • SPI can be computed to any time scale e. g., 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18months, 24 months, 36 months etc. • For Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Tulare river Basins, SPI was computed for 24 months time interval. SPI ≤ -2.0 Extremely Dry -2.0 < SPI ≤ -1.5 Moderately Dry -1.5 < SPI ≤ -1.0 Dry -1.0 < SPI < 1.0 Neutral 1.0 ≤ SPI < 1.5 Wet 1.5 ≤ SPI < 2.0 Moderately Wet 2.0 ≤ SPI Extremely Wet Ref: Nathaniel.B.
