Back in March 2020, when the true gravity of the situation first became apparent, Herts for Learning made significant changes to its training programme. We put in place a revised programme of digitally delivered courses in the expectation the disruption would be temporary. The feedback from delegates, many of whom were attending an online event for the first time, was overwhelmingly positive and over time we have all become more accustomed to remote delivery of training. Despite encouraging trends in infection rates and vaccination levels, it would be unwise to predict a return to ‘normality’ for schools in the near future. HfL has therefore decided to consolidate its move to digital delivery of training for the foreseeable future for the majority of events. For the autumn term, the overall programme now comprises over 250 individual courses. This includes a wide range of live events alongside pre-recorded sessions that are available for delegates to view at a time of their choosing. Of particular note is the continued development and enhancement of “Back on Track”, a package of CPD, resources and support, rooted in pedagogical research and effective formative assessment techniques. This has been specifically developed to enable primary leaders to plan strategically and deliver confidently the curriculum changes needed to get pupils back on track with their learning. We are also pleased to introduce new training to support schools and settings adjusting to significant reform of Early Years provision. Finally, I am delighted to announce that HfL will be holding a digitally delivered national conference on the future of assessment. This national digital conference will explore different perspectives on assessment, drawing on the views and expertise of a number of key-note speakers, some from the academic world and some school/academy leaders. This is the forerunner of a series of national events that we plan to deliver over the course of the next year. While not underestimating the scale of the continuing challenges of training online, I have every confidence that HfL’s considerable experience will continue to support you in achieving the best possible outcome for children. Full details of the training in our programme can be viewed and places booked through HfL’s CPD Hub: cpd.hertsforlearning.co.uk. Here are some tips on taking part successfully – whether you are joining an event from a school, setting, home or elsewhere. General advice 1. All events will be accessible on a mobile device (smartphone or tablet) – but if you have an option to access them via a laptop or desktop computer then this is preferable as text and images will be more legible and sound quality is likely to be higher, resulting in a better overall experience. You should have access to a power source for your device/computer to ensure you don’t lose power during the training. 2. Should you choose to access a live or pre-recorded event via a mobile device for convenience, then in many cases you can access the event via a computer at a later date. 3. If you are using a tablet or smartphone and are in a location with Wi-Fi – for example your home or school– then you should always use the Wi-Fi connection rather than your mobile data connection. Live- streamed events and video-heavy online content uses significant amounts of data. If you are taking part from home then be aware of other demands on your domestic broadband – if you need to direct others to stop using Netflix, Disney+, Xbox or Playstation then give them plenty of notice and possibly something else to do. 4. All HfL events are accessible through a web browser on your device. Where possible, we strongly advise using a modern browser such as Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari. If you don’t have access to one of these browsers (e.g. if Microsoft Edge is the only web browser available) and are unable to install a newer browser on your device or computer, then please contact whoever offers your technology support in good time – and ask them to install a modern browser for you. 5. If you want to hear what is being presented in an event, you will need to ensure that your device’s audio is working properly. Depending on your environment, you may need headphones or speakers in order to hear clearly. A headset supplied with a smartphone can often be plugged into a tablet or computer – but again, check in good time, rather than just before an event is due to start. Please also choose the environment you are taking part in carefully so you can participate without any unnecessary disturbance. 01438 544464 hertsforlearning.co.uk Platform-specific advice Training format Your HfL event will generally be Online training from Herts for Learning is delivered in different formats and is available to access from accessed via one of the following different areas within the CPD Hub.
