Delia Lawrie Full Steam Ahead for Multimillion

Delia Lawrie MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE 22 June 2009 Full Steam Ahead For Multimillion Dollar Road Upgrades Darwin and Palmerston residents will be benefiting from $17 million worth of road upgrades underway this dry season. Infrastructure Minister Delia Lawrie today said nine key projects in Darwin and Palmerston would support hundreds of Territory jobs and reduce traffic congestion, making it easier for motorists in the Territory’s two largest cities. “The Territory Government is investing millions of dollars into important road projects that will support Territory jobs and make driving easier for Territory motorists,” Ms Lawrie said. “We are spending about $17 million on road projects in the Darwin and Palmerston region with works to improve existing roads underway or due to begin shortly. “This includes $1.03 million to deliver a 500 metre extension of a second inbound lane along McMillans Road between the Vanderlin Drive roundabout and the Peter McAulay Centre. “This project will start soon to deliver new turning lanes into the Peter McAulay Centre and the popular Crocodylus Park wildlife research and education centre to improve safety for motorists. “Thousands of motorists drive along McMillans Road each day and the bottleneck during peak hour traffic can leave motorists frustrated as they approach the Vanderlin Drive roundabout. “Work is also underway on a $390,000 project to improve the Kalymnos Drive intersection with McMillans Road in Karama by upgrading in and outbound turning sections on Kalymnos Drive. “We are also spending $2.3 million to upgrade Tiger Brennan Drive between Woolner Road and Amy Johnson Avenue to deliver extra inbound and outbound passing lanes. “The Henderson Government will also deliver the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive between Dinah Beach Road and Woolner Road as well as new traffic lights at the Gonzales Road intersection as part of a $6 million project with work to start later this year. Other projects underway or set to begin later this year include: • $4 million duplication of McMinn Street between Foelsche Street and Frances Bay Drive; • $1.8 million to construct a third inbound lane along the Stuart Highway from Marjorie Street to McMillans Road; • $750,000 to improve the Stuart Highway intersection with Bagot Road and Snell St for turning traffic and upgraded pedestrian crossings near the flyover; and • $555,000 upgrade of the Elrundie Avenue and Catalina Road intersection.
