MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 30, 2008 Announcing the Museum of Health Care’s NEW Medical History Outreach Gallery Tour of the Hall of Honour at Kingston General Hospital If you’re looking for a fun, all-weather activity, our new, indoor, wheelchair-accessible tour offers an intriguing account of the shocking, odd, and amazing history of medicine and health care in Canada. From amputations and autopsies to smallpox and syphilis, you’re sure to be astounded. Learn about a time when a bottle of whisky was the only anesthetic available, and people with tuberculosis were thought to be vampires. Don’t believe it? Come see it for yourself. No reservations necessary. Daily tours depart at 10am and 2pm, and are approximately 60 minutes in length. Cost is $3.00 per person, and free for children ages 14 and under. As the only museum of its kind in the nation, The Museum of Health Care offers insight and fascinating tales about social conditions in Canada’s early years. Our newest tour experience starts inside the Museum located in the Ann Baillie Building at 32 George Street. Visitors enjoy a detailed account of the exhibitions “When Medicine Met Science” and “Joint Ventures”, before proceeding to the galleries located inside Kingston General Hospital’s Hall of Honour. Here the tour explores the feature exhibits “Beyond Ether: 150 years of Anesthesia”, “Fighting the White Plague: The Battle Against Tuberculosis”, and “The Inspiring Past – A Beacon for the Future: The KGH Auxiliary”. This exhibit tour provides a unique in depth look at disease and pathology, medical treatment and discovery, and the role of volunteers: three very different but monumentally significant aspects of health and heath care.
