Welcome to Pollock Pines Executive Director CEDAPP 2011 Business Directory Welcome Welcome to Pollock Pines...the rural, forested community that began in the 1850's and has survived decades of change while embracing its historical lore. Whether you are a casual visitor, new resident, or a community-committed local, this Directory is intended to help you learn a little more about Nature's Wonderland, the gateway to the Sierras. It will also help guide you to some of the best deals in town. Those businesses that advertise in this Directory are committed to preserving the heritage of Pollock Pines. They are as strongly com- mitted to increasing the prosperity of Pollock Pines, and therefore the quality of life of its citizens. We invite you to "come and play in Pollock Pines!" As Nature's Won- derland during all four seasons of the year, Pollock Pines has natural resources available to every age all throughout the year. As you skim these pages, you will learn more and more about the fun envi- ronment that some of us get to call home! Our lake (Jenkinson Lake) affords so many opportunities....camping, boating, skiing, pic- nicking, etc. See the article on how Jenkinson Lake became such an important part of Pollock Pines and El Dorado County. Be sure also to visit our bowling alley and fun center (Knotty Pines) and our resi- dent-owned golf course in Camino (Camino Heights Golf Course.) You will experience some of the finest dining in California at our res- taurants. Every restaurant has its own ambiance and influence, some historical, some themed, some just plain comfortable with good food! If you have need of grooming salons, fix-it shops, vehicle ne- cessities, etc, a drive down Pony Express Trail and Sly Park Road will answer your every need. At the same time, we have an enormous number of home-based businesses that you will also want to learn more about. We invite you to use the coupons at the back of the Directory. Not only will you experience savings, but the businesses will know that you have seen and used the Directory and that their advertising costs were not in vain. Even if you choose not to use the coupons, please let the advertisers know how much you value their presence in Pollock Pines and that you saw them in the Business Directory. Without them, we would all need to travel down the hill for those same services. Their advertising also supports the insurance neces- sary to provide the twenty + events and seven on-going projects that CEDAPP provides to the community annually. So go our busi- nesses, so goes this community! Welcome to Pollock Pines! Jeanne Harper, Executive Director Nature’s Wonderland! vii History of Sly Park SLY PARK RECREATION AREA AND JENKINSON LAKE Past, Present, and Future The park has been voted “Best Recreation Facility” in El Dorado County by readers of the Mountain Democrat newspaper. SLY PARK RECREATION AREA is a hidden gem located 11 miles east of Placerville in Pollock Pines. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation created in the lake in 1955 to provide water and irrigation for residents. Today the lake is owned and operated by El Dorado Irrigation District (EID) and supplies drinking and irrigation water to a large portion of El Dorado County, and fabulous recreation opportunities. As far back as 10,000 years ago there is evidence of movement into the area by Stone Age native people. The largest of the groups spoke Penutian languages including the Miwok and the Maidu. While not closely related, these two groups were related linguistically and culturally, which makes it difficult for archeologists to determine which sites might have been occupied by members of which group. Onsite at Sly Park Recreation Area is a Miwok museum, which you can visit on your way through the park. So, why is it called Sly Park? The area was named in 1847 after Corpo- ral James Calvin Sly, one of a group of Mormons who had been sent to scout for an alternate route to the Donner Pass through the Sierra Ne- vada Mountains. A year after the tragedy of the Donner party, Corporal Sly’s group searched for a route using the Carson Pass. Sly returned to lead other groups through the area, but did not settle here. Instead, he settled in Canada and died during the Black Hawk wars. However, his name remained a part of the legend and lore of the Pollock Pines area. viii Live and Play in Pollock Pines... History of Sly Park When the Gold Rush hit El Dorado County, large numbers of immigrants traveled through the area in search of gold. There are areas where wagon ruts can still be found worn into the granite. The meadow area of Sly Park was occupied well into the twentieth century by homes, hotels, sawmills, and other structures. Even now, you can still see remnants of stone chimneys (like the one on the right side of the picture) that mark where houses once stood. As the principle sources of income in El Dorado County shifted, so did the population centers, and eventually the Sly Park meadow no longer had any human occupants. The 1955 construction of Jenkinson Lake and the Sly Park Recreation Area resulted in increased development of the existing Pollock Pines and Pleasant Valley areas. Today, the park boasts 191 overnight campsites and plenty of day-use areas for fishing, boating, equestrian trail riding, hiking, and biking. There are separate use camps for equestrian camping with corrals and large group areas available for family reunions, church groups, or for the boys and/or girls scout troops. There is also an event facility with plenty of parking for meetings, weddings, group events, or memorial services. During the summer season, a number of boaters rent slips in the marina and keep their boats at the lake. There are two newly renovated boat ramps for launching your boat. They also have rental boats and kayaks available. So, what’s there to do at Sly Park? Hiking, biking, swimming, water- skiing, kayaking, horseback riding, camping, and of course, we won’t forget the fishing.
