2018 C.F. Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees The Hall of Fame was established in 2010 to honor Brewer High School teams, individuals and coaches from the past six decades who have demonstrated outstanding performance in Brewer athletics. Two teams and four individuals were selected for induction this year, and the Brewer Athletic Hall of Fame will now include 37 inductees. 2018 Inductee, The 1956 Girls’ Basketball Team The 1956 Girls’ Basketball Team was the 1st District Champion Team in Brewer High School history and the only district team to advance to the regional playoffs in 1956. Head Coach was Ellen Johnson. Players were: Sharon Clark Blair, Barbara Burchfield Bryant, Alberta Foley, Hershelene Fowler, Genette Vanderford Lee, Donnie Long Loomer, Norma Miles, Bettye Hudson Landau, Dorothy Griggs Morris, Glenda Lancaster Rawlins, Gail Young Stanford, Myrna Stanford Thompson, Sue Turner, Jimmie Sessions Vanderford and Linda Allred Young. Team Managers were: Pat Oler Day, Sharon Beckham Scott, Gail Stumbo and Sally Werner. Linda Allred, “Dot” Griggs, Alberta Foley and Jimmie Sessions earned All District honors. Four-year lettermen were Sue Turner, Dorothy Griggs, Jimmie Sessons and Linda Allred. 1989 Girls’ 800 Relay Team The 1989 Girls’ 800 Relay Team of Stephanie Slovak Eudaly, Tarona “T-Rae” Smith, Cassandra James Sutton and Teresa Woods was coached Linda Sarrett Mathis. The girls won the 1989 District Championship with a time of 1 minute 44 seconds. They qualified at Regionals and the team was the 1989 Regional Runner Up. 2018 Inductee Michael “Mickey” Lee, Class of 1958 A member of the varsity baseball, basketball and track teams ALL four years, Mickey Lee also played for the varsity football team his freshmen year. Selected to the 1st Team All District Baseball Team in 1955, ‘56, ‘57 and ‘58, Mickey was a Student Body President, Student Council President and Class President. He graduated fifth in his class. Captain of the basketball team, Mickey was named to the 1956 All Tournament Basketball Team and 1958 All District Basketball Team. He played baseball for Tarleton State University on a scholarship from 1958 to 1960. He was selected to the 1960 Baseball 1st Team NJCAA All American Team. Mickey was the 1960 Most Valuable Player in the NJCAA World Series. He received a baseball scholarship to play at Baylor University from 1960 to ‘61 and then played for the semi pros until age 25. Mickey was inducted into the 1980 Tarleton State University Athletic Hall of Fame. 2018 Inductee Kerry Knox, Class of 1985 A 1983, ‘84 and ‘85 All District Pitcher, Kerry Knox was voted All District MVP in 1984 and ‘85. Named All Tarrant County Pitcher in 1984 and ‘85, Kerry broke the ‘85 state single season strike out record with 225 strikeouts in 110 innings. He had 545 career strike outs in 305 innings and three no-hitters. A member of the varsity football team for two years, Kerry played for the 1985 team which went the furthest any team in Brewer history had achieved, advancing three rounds in the playoffs. He played in the 1985 Texas All Star Game and earned a TCU baseball scholarship. A 1988 Sunner League All American Pitcher, Kerry was the 1989 Pitcher of the Year. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1989, Kerry pitched professionally for 11 years for San Diego, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Texas. He also played for Italy, Taiwan, Mexico and Venezuela and was the Italian Major League ERA leader in 1998. 2018 Inductee Matt Chapman, Class of 1995 Named Brewer High School’s Most Athletic in 1995, Matt Chapman was a four-year letterman in baseball, a three-year letterman in football and he played for the Bears’ varsity basketball team for one. The 1992 District Football Sophomore of the Year, Matt was the ’93 and ’94 All District Linebacker and ’94 2nd Team All District Running Back. A member of the 1994 Bi-District Champion Baseball Team, Matt was selected as the ’93 District Baseball Sophomore of the Year and ’94 District Baseball MVP. The 1995 All District Pitcher and All Area Utility Baseball Player, Matt was also selected to the Star Telegram Baseball All Star Team that year. He received a football scholarship to Sam Houston State University, and Matt is now the head football coach at Peaster ISD. 2018 Inductee Matt Chapman 2018 Inductee Kelly Shoppach, Class of 1998 Named Brewer’s Most Athletic in 1 998, Kelly Shoppach was the 1997 District Football MVP with 1,100 yards rushing, 400 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns, five in the SAME game. Selected 1996 1st Team All District Running Back, Kelly earned All District Football honors in ’95, ’96 and ’97. Kelly was selected to the ‘97 and ’98 Louisville Slugger TPX All-American Team, and he was the ‘97 and ‘98 All-State Catcher, Dallas All-Area Catcher and District MVP. The 1997 All Tarrant County Catcher, Kelly was the 1998 Tarrant County Player of the Year and Tarrant County Catcher. He was recognized as the ‘96 Newcomer of the Year and 1st Team All District Catcher. Kelly received a scholarship to play baseball at Baylor University, where he was the 2001 Big 12 Player of the Year and 1st Team All American. He received the 2001 Johnny Bench Award as the nation’s top collegiate catcher, AND he was named 2001 1st Team All American by Baseball America, Baseball Weekly, the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball and NBWA. His Major League debut was in 2005 with the Boston Red Sox. He also played for the Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners until 2013. In 2008, he became the second ALB player in history and 8th MLB player overall to record 5 extra base hits in one game. He had three doubles and two home runs, including a game-tying home run in the ninth inning. .
