Was It Captain Smith's Fault?

Was it Captain Smith’s fault? Captain Smith was the ship’s captain. This journey was supposed to be his last because he was retiring. He ignored seven iceberg warnings. He did not think that a ship as modern as Titanic would ever sink. He was convinced to go at full speed to get there quickly and show everyone what a magnificent ship Titanic was. If he had slowed down the disaster might not have happened. Was it the shipbuilder’s fault? After the disaster the rivets that were used to hold the ship together were found to be made of poor iron. When the ship hit the iceberg the rivets broke and parts of the ship came apart. Also the shipbuilders did not put enough lifeboats on the ship. Was it Bruce Ismay’s fault? Bruce Ismay was in charge of the White Star Line and he was on the ship. He wanted more room for first class passengers so he asked for some of the lifeboats to be removed and the watertight compartments to be lower. He wanted the Titanic to get to America early so he convinced Captain Smith to sail at full speed. Would the disaster have happened if they had been going slower? Was it Thomas Andrews’ fault? Thomas Andrews was the Titanic’s architect which means he designed the ship. He was asked to make compartments to stop water getting in smaller so that there could be more first class cabins. Would it have happened if he had insisted the compartments were higher? Was it Captain Lord’s fault? Captain Lord was the captain of the Californian ship. He let the radio controller turn off the radio and go to bed that night. They were only 19 miles away from Titanic when they saw the rockets going off. Captain Lord decided they must be having a party so they did not help. If the radio had been turned on would they have saved more people? Who do you think was to blame? Talk to a grown up about who you think was to blame. Why do you think that? Do you think it was more than one person to blame? Does your grown up have the same ideas as you. Either in your workbook or on Seesaw notebook write about who you think was mostly to blame and why. .
