Nahdiyah Supervisor II : Nasrum This research was about cultural imperialism in movie “Africa United” which aimed to describe the causes of cultural imperialism and the influences of cultural imperialism to the children in movie “Africa United”. This research focused on Herbert Schiller‟s theory about cultural imperialism. Then, the data were analyzed using qualitative method. The researcher used note taking as the instrument to find out the valid data. The researcher found that the children got the cultural imperialism through the media. The findings showed that there were two kinds of media that showed in the movie, they were TV and Magazine. Then, there were three influences of cultural imperialism towards children in the movie, they are perception, expectation and audience goal. Therefore, the researcher concluded that Africa United movie showed the way children whom got cultural imperialism and the influences of cultural imperialism where the children were on the journey to World cup. Keywords: Cultural Imperialism,Media , Influences. xi CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background Culture is often considered the core concept in intercultural communication. Although observation is a common research technique, little attention has been given to the effects of culture on observer judgment making. Relating to this, Gudykunst in Nur (2014:9) says that intercultural communication studies often focus on how cultural groups differ from one another: Muslims differ from Cristians, Japanesediffer from United Stated Americans, men differ from women, environtmentalistsdiffer from conservationists, pro-lifers differ from pro-choicers, old differ from youngand on are telling examples of this. Xia (2009: 97) says that culture is a vague concept which includes extensive content such as sight, smell, sound, value, tradition, custom, behavior and the
