Have you ever thought, “if only I could go back in time and undo this or unsay that,” or maybe if I could go back and do something that I had failed to do or say something that I left unsaid? Perhaps everyone is haunted by regrets of what should have been done or could have been done. Martha and Mary both blurted out: "Lord, if only you had been here our brother would not have died!" Did our Lord say: "You are both right!" Did He snap His fingers and bring everyone back in time four or five days earlier to a time when Lazarus was sick but still alive? No, He didn’t, but He could have, if He had wanted to. But we never see God undoing time that way. God deals with what is and not what might have been. What is sad is that many people live much of their lives in the past, haunted by regrets of what should have been done or left undone or should have been said or left unsaid. They are like a person driving a car while mostly looking in the rear-view mirror. The raising of Lazarus is a story of God teaching us to live in the here and now and to deal with what is and not with what might have been or what could have been. Lazarus was dead and he was in the tomb and his body was already decomposing. Yet, it is never too late for God to revive and revitalize that which is dead. And to affect the miracle, Jesus issues three commands. The first, “Roll away the stone!" Who had placed this huge round stone in the doorway in the first place? People did! And now Jesus was telling them to roll it away! How many huge stones have you and I placed as
