Bumps Under J/Ψ The Eta, Omega, and Phi mesons Mesons • A Meson is a sub atomic particle made up of a Quark and an Anti- Quark. • Mesons are a part of the Hadron family. • They have spins and are considered Bosons. • They play a crucial part in nuclear interaction since they act as force mediating particles over short distances. Shield of the University of Bristol where the first Meson, the Pion, was Discovered in 1947 by Cecil Powell, Cesar Lattes, and Giuseppe Occhialini. The Eta (η) Meson on a Large Scale The Eta (η) Meson The Eta (η) Meson, Continued.. • The Eta Meson is a η Mass: 0.547 GeV combination of the Up, η’ Mass: 0.957 GeV Down, and Strange -19 Quarks and their Anti- η Lifetime: 5.0x10 η’ Lifetime: 3.2x10-21 Quarks. • The Top Quark is unable to create a similar Meson because of its fast decay rate. • The Eta Meson was discovered in 1961 while colliding Pion Nucleons at the Bevatron. The Omega (ω) Meson The Omega (ω) Meson, Continued.. • The Omega Meson has a mass of ω Mass: 0.782 GeV 1,532 times larger than an -25 electron. ω Lifetime: 7.0x10 • Discovered in 1961 by B. Maglic , L. Alvarez, A. Rosenfield and M. Stevenson. The Phi (φ) Meson The Phi (φ) Meson, Continued.. • Formed from the Strange Quark and the Strange φ Mass: 1.02 GeV Anti-Quark. φ Lifetime: 1.55x10-22 • Decays into two Kaons. • The Phi Meson is a Vector Meson. • Discovered at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the 1950s.
