Welcome to Fordham University

2019-2020 Fordham University Visiting Team Guide Welcome to Fordham University Fordham, New York City’s Jesuit University, offers a distinctive educational experience rooted in the 450- year old Jesuit tradition of intellectual rigor and personal attention, set amid the dynamic rhythm of New York City, the cultural and commercial capital of the world. Fordham was founded in 1841 by Rev. John Hughes, Archbishop of New York City, who turned the school over to the Jesuits in 1846, when the New York Legislature granted it a charter as a university. Fordham enrolls about 8,855 students in its four undergraduate colleges, in addition to 7,136 students in its six graduate and professional schools. Offering more than 65 majors, the required Common Core Curriculum ensures that students develop a range of knowledge that secures the quality and reputation of the Fordham bachelor’s degree. Fordham’s three residential campuses in New York City include the beautiful Rose Hill campus, located just steps away from the New York Botanical Gardens and the Bronx Zoo, the Lincoln Center campus, in the heart of Manhattan’s artistic community and the scenic Tarrytown campus which overlooks the Hudson River. Fordham sponsors 22 men’s and women’s varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Confer- ence in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women’s rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-FCS) for football. New York City In what Pope John Paul II called “the capital of the world”, many of the world’s most ambitious young men and women make their mark in the arts, communications, business, finance, educa- tion, publishing, science, social science, the law, and international politics. For more than 150 years, Fordham University has been a vital part of this exciting city, offering its students an education that is as stimulating as their surroundings, not to men- tion personally and professionally fulfilling. New York City offers Fordham students a campus without peer. Across the street from the Rose Hill campus are two of the world’s most distinguished biological research facilities: the New York Botanical Garden and the Wildlife Con- servation Society, more commonly known as the Bronx Zoo. The Lincoln Center campus is right at home in its theatrical and artistic neighborhood on Manhattan’s upper west side. Among other interests in New York City are Central Park, South Street Seaport, Rockefeller Center (where Saturday Night Live is broadcast), New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, United Nations and the world famous Broadway.
