Brighthelmston, Sussex captures a significant era in Brighton’s history as a seaside resort, and was for many years known only through an engraving by George Cooke published in Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England (1825). The original work remained effectively out of sight in private ownership for over 100 years. In January 2012 Brighthelmston, Sussex was put up for auction, and the Royal Pavilion & Museums successfully acquired it, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Art Fund – Royal Pavilion 30 October – 10 November Making It 2013 – Made locally – Sold globally. Then a chance discovery opens an unhealed wound and a long buried secret is revealed. In the nine months before the outbreak of World War II, the Kindertransport ferried nearly 10,000, mainly Jewish children from Germany and Austria to safety. Many would never see their parents again.
