COLLECTION NAME : O'Sbaughnessy papers. 2ll Page 1 CENTRAL FIGURE: O'Shaughnessy, Arthur William Edgar, 184ll-1881 , poet and litterateur. DATES COVERED : 1832- 1906 or later; bulk in 1870s. DATE WRI TTEN : 1832- 1906 or later PLACE: Great Britain LANGUAGE: English France French us TYPE: Unbound collection of letters received by O'S ; also other letters; literary texts by O'S and others ; some sketches in letters, and photographs. Primarily literary and artistic gossip. EXPLANATION AND PROVENANCE : John Westland Marston (1819- 1890) was a blank- verse dramatist moving in London literary circles. His daughter Eleanor Marston (d. 1879) appears to have kept an album of letters received by Marston from notable English, French , and American authors and actors. In 1873 Eleanor married A.W.E. 0 1Shaughnessy, who worked for the British Museum of Natural History under the protection of the novelist Bulwer- Lytton (Baron Lytton) : O' S's maternal aunt was Lytton's mistress. O'S moved in London and Parisian literary and artistic circles, and Eleanor seems to have added his incoming corr espondence to her album. After O'S's death in 1881 , his cousin and literary executor Alfred W. Newport Deacon (1847- 1915) seems to have added letters addressed to himself (some concerning O'S, some not) , and 3 letters by O' S. He annotated some of the letters and some of the album sheets with identifications. By the time the Department acquired the contents of the album from Maggs in 1956 it had been disbound and the letters cut out (many still show signs of having been mounted on-coloured paper) . Most annotations were lost in this process; and the album may have contained more (or less) than the present collection. Ca 1962 the Department bought and added 1 letter by O'S. In 1963 we added from the O'Hegarty acquisition the literary texts by O'S; in 1989 we added from the Paden acquisition lJ letters by O' S and a contract. We will continue adding to the collection.
