The walk will focus on Nicola’s debut novel, The Hidden Bones, with Nicola explaining the inspirations behind her writing and insights from her archeological work. The walk itself is approximately five miles and will begin and end in the centre of Avebury. It will start outside The Red Lion in Avebury at 10.30 am and is expected to take approximately 2½ hours. Avebury is approximately one hour’s drive from Salisbury, with one National Trust car park at Avebury itself (free to NT members). Gilbert’s crime writing career began in Salisbury in the 1930s, when he was a teacher at the Cathedral School: SPONSORED BY his first novel, Close Quarters, is set around a fictional cathedral close. Harriett Gilbert, Michael’s daughter, is a writer and broadcaster and currently presents World Book Club on the BBC World Service and A Good Radio on Radio 4. Harriett will be in discussion with festival director Tom Bromley, to talk about her father’s life and work. This event is being supported by the British BY SUPPORTED Library. It won the 1992 NCR Book Award, the British Book of the Year for 1993 and was voted number 11 in Waterstones’ Books of the Twentieth Century poll. It is widely considered to be the biggest selling non-fiction paperback in recent history – a bestseller everywhere apart from mainland China, where Chang’s books remain banned. Jung Chang is also the author of Mao: The Unknown Story (with Jon Halliday) and Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China.
