No. Heritage ITEM IDENTIFICATION SHEET 1 Act ITEM NAME: Office Use 1978-80 "View Bank" ITEM No. Former or other DOCKET No. HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE LOCATION Address Just outside the hamlet of Finniss, a road ends at what was patently the big house of the district. This was the Bowmans' Town Finniss "View Bank" aptly named, as the homestead is placed on a high Postcode bank of the Finniss River, wiL~ extensive views. The house Section 2426 large but not grandiose, a single storey building carefully Hundred Kondoparinga constructed in stone with protruding dressed stone quoins. County low-set front section (kitchen) has its own verandah with L.G.A. strathalbyn andahs on the other three sides of the house. There is a cas­ S.H.P. Region 5 tellation over the front entrance. A.M.G. Ref. 6627-II 54 30210 608150 Downslope is a large brick and stone shed which may have been~-------------------------- originally horse-yard and stables. SUBJECT 1 William Bowman, as one of the districts early pastoralists, 4.1 was in occupation of this property by 1844, purchasing the land freehold in the early 1850's. Bowman was elected as first Chairman of the District Council of Bremer in 1855 but left the area in about 1857. Although sections of the house may date from Bowman's ownership, the present building PERIOD to date from the 1880s when it was owned by William Sander­ State grove Rogers. No. 9 Heritage ITEM IDENTIFICATION SHEET Act ITEM NAME: Rankine's ferry site Office Use 1978-80 ITEM No. Former or other DOCKET No. HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE LOCATION Address "The Rankine brothers had been the first to take up land at Town Clayton Bay EstatE Strathalbyn, running stock down to the shore of Lake Postcode Alexandrina, and their holdings were soon extended to Section 447 Point Sturt. By the end of 1838, Dr. John Rankine had Hundred Alexandrina leased Hindmarsh Island from the Crown for;{_ 10 per annum and County on it he built a substantial house of local limestone rubble L.G.A. Strathalbyn called 'The Castle' (see D.C. Port Elliot and Goolwa item S.H.P. Region 5 no. 40). The house was surrounded by accommodation for his A.M.G. Ref. 6626-I stock keepers and further homes were erected ... on the 54 31210 606900 opposite side of the narrow neck of lake under Clayton Cliffs; the two establishments were connected by a ferry. SUBJECT These buildings were some of the earliest in the lakes region to be constructed of permanent materials and con­ 1.1 stitute the only recorded complex of any size before 1845." 4.1 4.7 At this site the ferry landing area and a few limestone wall relics appear to be the only visible remains of the Rankine settlement on the Clayton Peninsula. The historical PERIOD significance of the Rankine enterprise, however, make this State an important archaeological site.
