Dr. Melbourne, FL 32935 4 The Senior PGA TOUR: r"' His tory and Format Labron Harris, Jr. Administrator Senior PGA TOUR Interest expressed by senior players during 1979 led to the establishment, in 1980, of the Senior PGA TOUR. Preliminary discussions held during the 1979 PGA Seniors Championship led to the formation of a Senior Advisory Council. The Council members for 1980 included Dan Sikes, Chairman, Sam Snead, Honorary Chairman, Julius Bores, Gardner Dickinson, Bob Goalby, Don January and Bob Rosburg. This council met on January 16. 1980, at Ponte Vedra, FL, and established recommendations as to eligibility and tournament format which would assure the participation of leading players in Senior PGA TOUR tournaments. Recommendations of the Senior Advisory Council were accepted by the Tour- nament Policy Board of the PGA TOUR, and the Senior PGA TOUR made its debut with the $125,000 Atlantic City Seniors International, at the Atlantic City Country Club in Atlantic City, NJ, June 19-22. At the recommendation of the Senior Advisory Council, eligibility for Senior PGA TOUR competition was established on two criteria: leadership in career earnings, and leadership in career victories. With players made eligible by these rules, the basic format for Senior PGA TOUR competition was established to include a field of 50 players, with 40 players to be determined by the two eligibility criteria and 10 players selected by tournament sponsors and through qualifying competitions. The basic format also provides for a two-day Pro-Am event on Thursday and Friday with the formal 54-hole competition Friday through Sunday with the second round of the Pro-Am counting as the first round of the official competition. Administrator of the Senior PGA TOUR is Labron Harris, who also serves as Director of Tournament Administration for the PGA TOUR. Inquiries about the Senior PGA TOUR may be addressed to Harris in care of the PGA TOUR, Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra, FL 32082.
