I am honoured to have had the opportunity to represent Australia in my chosen sport of Cycling at Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championships. I’m also grateful for the sporting opportunities afforded me through the NSW public education system. That’s where my journey started! From participating in sport activities at the local level, I gradually progressed into competitive sporting events, including those offered by the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) and NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association (CHSSA). Attending Bowral Public School, Bowral High School and Endeavour Sports High School, I was encouraged by many committed and supportive teachers. One of my fondest memories of school sport is winning the Australian All Schools Athletics Team event three times with my close friends from Endeavour Sports High School. I played a range of sports, including Touch, Netball, Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Triathlon, Hockey and Soccer. Over time, I began to specialise more in Athletics. Despite having success on the track, by the time I had reached Year 12, a number of factors had drawn me toward the sport of Cycling. It became my passion and it has now taken me all around the world. Sport provides a range of physical, social and other benefits. On top of that, if you work hard it can take you to places you might never have imagined. Sport is about having fun with team mates and enjoying training and playing. Enjoy your time at these (name of sport) Championships; meet and participate in the spirit of sport. Be respectful of officials, team mates, opponents and spectators. They are all an important part of your journey. Just like I did, you are sure to meet new friends and hopefully one day you will look back at your time in school sport and appreciate it as a valuable part of your development. Good luck in your future sporting endeavours! Editor’s Note: Kaarle McCulloch is one of the most multi‐talented sports people to have graduated from the nursery of NSW public school sport. Kaarle was the recipient of nine CHS medals across three sports (Triathlon, Athletics, Cross‐Country). Her achievements at a state, national and international level are outstanding and include: * 3 World Championship Gold medals, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze (Team Sprint) * 4 Commonwealth Games 2 Gold medals, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze (Team Sprint, 500m Time Trial, Keirin and Sprint) * An Olympic Bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games (Team Sprint) NSW School Sport is extremely proud of Kaarle McCulloch! WELCOME MESSAGE From the NSW Department of Education I am delighted to welcome competitors, parents, caregivers, team and event officials and supporters to Bathurst for the 2018 NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association Boys Football Championships. Our school sport programs are rich in tradition and your participation at this event acknowledges your part in this long history. School sport championships and carnivals, organised and conducted by our state and regional schools sports associations, showcase the enormous talent that is nurtured in our schools. These opportunities encourage competitors to participate in the spirit of friendship, fair play and respect for others. Students are here this week representing their schools, and schools sports associations. Many students will achieve a personal best and gain a greater understanding that participation in sport provides enjoyment, builds connections and develops lifelong skills, including team work, problem solving and decision making. On behalf of the NSW Department of Education and the NSW Combine High Schools Sports Association, I would like to thank our host school sport association Western for their hospitality and event organisation. I also extend my thanks and appreciation to the parents, caregivers, teachers, principals and community sports organisations that have supported this championship. I would particularly like to acknowledge Teachers Mutual Bank for their ongoing support of our school sporting programs. I trust that all competitors will be rewarded through their own personal performances and that they will leave with fond memories of their participation in the NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association Boys Football Championships. I am certain that every individual effort will be recognised and greatly appreciated by schools and schools sports associations. Mark Scott Secretary, Department of Education NSW CHS CONVENORS WELCOME It is with great pleasure that I welcome all competitors, Department of Education representatives and visitors to Bathurst for the 2018 NSW Combined High Schools Football State Carnival. The students are here this week representing their School Sports Associations, Schools and families. It is an honour to gain representative status as an athlete and we look forward to the performances of those who may emulate the careers of many of the current and former Socceroos, Young Socceroos and A‐League players who have participated at these championships. From this championship the NSW Combined High Schools State teams to compete in the NSW All Schools Tournament during June will be announced for fixtures against Combined Catholic Colleges and Combined Independent Schools. This event also serves as the trials for this year’s Inter‐State Series, which will be held at Football NSW during July/August. We look forward to some wonderful football with the challenge for all teams to step up to the quality football we saw from last years champions, Sydney West who narrowly accounted for Sydney South West in the final. I would like to thank Western Schools Sports Association for hosting the 2018 carnival. Our thanks are also extended to Football NSW who, along with Puma are also great supporters and sponsors of our Football Program Finally, may I wish all the 2018 regional football representatives from across NSW the very best of luck and again, enjoy your “time on the park” and I look forward to the great sportsmanship, athleticism and quality football of this annual event.
