SURREY COUNTY ATHLETIC NEWS (Issue 72 - February 2013)

SURREY COUNTY ATHLETIC NEWS (Issue 72 - February 2013) While it is the aim of this publication to report the good news about the Athletics community in Surrey there are times when I also have to report some sad news. DEREK CROOKES 1940 - 2012 It is with great sadness that we report the death of Derek Crookes on 26 September 2012 at Epsom General Hospital. Although his last years were ones of poor health we remember Derek as a man of great vigour and enthusiasm. Derek, a member of Belgrave Harriers, became involved with many aspects of our sport not only within the County Association - a stalwart of the South of Thames Cross-Country Association and the Thameside Track & Field League for Young athletes typify the breadth of his interest. Within the County he was President of the Surrey County AAA in 1985. In addition he was General Secretary and organised our Road & Cross-Country Championships. Derek was one of the instigators of Under-13 Inter-Counties Track & Field Meeting that Surrey has hosted since 1993 - a meeting that has provided the first major competition for many young athletes including the 2012 Olympic Long Jump Champion, Greg Rutherford. In recognition of this the meeting has been renamed as “The Derek Crookes Under 13 Inter-County Meeting”. We also note the deaths, in October, of Chris and Fred Stebbings. Chris passed away after a short illness and then elder brother Fred died a couple of weeks later after several years of ill- health. The two brothers had their formative athletic years as members of Croydon Harriers and both were Surrey champions. They had both moved to Bedfordshire where they served both their new county and Luton United AC as administrators. In November Terry Torpey died after a long illness. He was a senior long jump coach and a regular supporter of our County championships. In December Karen Davies (nee Marsh) passed away. Karen, as a member of Mitcham AC, won the Surrey Intermediate 1500m in 1971 setting a CBP of 4:59.4. - - - o 0 o - - - EUROPEAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, 9 DECEMBER 2012 Six Surrey athletes were selected for the British team. Emelia GORECKA (AFD) was unable to retain her title but still finished a creditable 2nd in the U20 race. Lily PARTRIDGE (AFD) was 15th in the U23 Women’s race and Ian BAILEY (AFD) was 18th in the U20 Men’s race. We had two representatives in the Senior Women’s race where Elle BAKER (Stockport) was 18th and Emily WICKS (AFD) was 33rd. All of these also won team medals. The sixth person selected, Jonny HAY (AFD), had the misfortune to be taken ill the week before and therefore did not participate. 1 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS Masters Cross Country, Richmond Park, 13 October 2012 WOMEN 6k (70 finishers) MEN UNDER 60 10k (80 finishers) W35-1 Helen Taranowski West 4 23:14 M40-1 Stuart Major THH 34:00 W35-2 Nicola Sturzaker HHH 24:21 M40-2 Justin West Strag 35:29 W35-3 Natalie Wilson Reig P 24:52 M40-3 Chris Daniels THH 35:37 W40-1 Zoe West E&E 25:04 M45-1 Peter Lee HW 36:11 W40-2 Michelle Oldham Wok 25:09 M45-2 Dave Williamson Tad 37:07 W40-3 Steph Robson HW 25:33 M45-3 Trevor Maguire Rane 37:23 W45-1 Sue McDonald SLH 24:44 M50-1 John Shaw Rane 38:16 W45-2 Susanna Harrison Wok 25:17 M50-2 David Ogden SLH 38:25 W45-3 Kay Trinder Wok 25:25 M50-3 Antonio Martins Reig P 38:38 W50-1 Dee Smale Strag 25:30 M55-1 Glen Quarton SLH 37:48 W50-2 Chris Costiff SLH 25:51 M55-2 Chris Owens Rane 40:56 W50-3 Anne Davidson DMV 27:55 M55-3 Rhodri Davies THH 42:53 W55-1 Anna Garnier THH 26:32 W55-2 Hazel Imeson Tad 27:40 MEN OVER 60 6k (28 finishers) W55-3 Jo Quantrill SLH 28:03 M60-1 Mike Mann Dul R 25:13 W60-1 Jane Davies E&E 26:24 M60-2 Steve Sandham Strag 26:34 W60-2 Marion Ellingham Wav 30:24 M60-3 Steve Knight HHH 26:41 M65-1 Geoff Newton Tad 25:44 M65-2 Ken Lee SLH 29:59 M65-3 Malcolm Howard Walt 30:14 TEAMS M70-1 John Garber HHH 30:54 WOMEN 35-44 M70-2 Kevin Burnett SoC 42:22 1 Herne Hill H 16 M75-1 Keith Spacie THH 29:55 2 Ranelagh H 26 M75-2 Brian Shave HHH 37:16 3 Hercules Wimbledon AC 26 M75-3 Ken Sheppard SLH 38:57 WOMEN 45+ MEN 40-49 1 South London H 20 1 Thames Hare & Hounds 11 2 The Stragglers 21 2 South London H 19 3 Thames Hare & Hounds 22 3 The Stragglers 32 MEN 50-59 MEN 60+ 1 South London H 9 1 Ranelagh H 15 2 Ranelagh H 13 2 Hercules Wimbledon AC 30 3 Herne Hill H 38 3 Herne Hill H 31 NOTE. They will be scheduled as far as possible to allow competitors to take part in both the 4x100m and 4x200m relays as well as compete in the Combined Events. It is hoped that we will have an even greater entry this year and there will be medals for each member of the first three teams home in both events.
