THE 51st INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION Gamma Phi Betas from across this country and Canada gathered in June at the French Lick-Sheraton Hotel to cele brate the sorority's 90th year and to make dynamic plans for the next decade. Happy reunions of old friends and the joy of making new ones marked the arrival of delegates and visitors. Quickly registered and refreshed, everyone gathered for dinner, host essed by the Champaign-Urbana alumnae and University of Illinois. One of the many memorable luncheons and dinners which followed clever themes, this one featured "The Girl Behind the Gamma Phi Beta Pennant." The first general session of convention that evening, June 22, graciously conducted by Beatrice Hill Wittenberg, Grand President, set the tone for the week's program. Each day brought important business to the floor . early morning classes in parliamentary procedure . informal buzz sessions . committee meetings . and rare, spare moments for visiting. Enthusiastic applause greeted the newly elected members of Grand Council at the final session of business, and the convention closed with the traditional Carnation Banquet. "Symphony in Pink," theme of the banquet, was carried out with beautiful pink carnation and candle arrangements. Developing the theme to show how Gamma Phi Betas can make delightful, harmonious, and meaningful music were Barbara Burns Hiscock, U. of Washington; Noreen Linduska Zahour, Illinois; Ene Koivastik, North Dakota State colle giate; Jocelyn Birch Burdick, Northwestern. Donna Schramm, Northwestern, thrilled her audience with beautiful, beloved Gamma Phi Beta songs, ending with the inspiring, "In the Heart of a Pink Carnation." Ardis McBroom Marek, Northwestern, Toastmistress, then presented the Past Grand President's badge with these words: "If the lamp should burn out because the oil of mediocrity could not keep it bright ... if the Book is banned because man has lost his faith ... if the carnation should be crushed beneath the coarse boots of conformity ... let us be grateful that for nearly a century, we have been in Gamma Phi Befa's new Grand President, Orra Spencer Reid (U. of Michi stilled with an inner glow that can never be extinguished. gan) receives fhe Presic/enf's badge from retiring Beatrice Hill Wittenberg.
