Conceived as the joint vision of company founder, Richard Samuel Reynolds, Sr. and the world's premier corporate architect, Gordon Bunshafi(1909-1990) of Skidmore, Owings & Memll, the headquarters is a monumental testament to architectural excellence. Classically elegant and subtly innovative, the International Style Executive Office Building is an archetype of suburban corporate headquarters: a medium-height office building in a park-like setting. The four-story courtyard building, like a palazzo, has a clearly defined base supporting thepiano nobile, the upper stories, and the "cornice" or cap. Architectural historian Richard Guy Wilson said of the headquarters that it "exemplifies the genius and promise of post World War 11 American modemism .....[u]tilizing modern materials such as glass, steel, and especially aluminum, the Reynolds also makes use of time tested forms such as thepalazzo type of format, and the courtyard" (Wilson 1998).
