Summer Reading: Class of 2020 MAOS Advance Placement Literature and Composition Woods Guiding Question: To what extent does a character from the novel (may be the primary character or a secondary character) outwardly conform while inwardly questioning his or her role and situation in society? Part One: Reading Assignment We are going to do summer reading a bit different this year. Rather than keeping a journal you all are going to read All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. This historical novel is set in WW2, in occupied France. Doerr was awarded the Pulitzer prize for fiction in 2015 and the novel has garnered world-wide praise. It is widely available at local libraries and used book stores. Amazon sells used copies for as little as $2.00. If you buy the book, please plan on bringing it to class with you the first week of school. Part Two: Writing Assignment After reading, write a short essay that answers the Guiding Question above. Essays should be in MLA format, approximately 500 words (2 pages). Essays will be due at the end of week two. Part Two: Words to Know It is expected that students have working definitions of the 50 attached words (on back) prior to the beginning of class. Most of these words should be review for you.
