Up until the late 19th Century the town lay to the east of the castle and to the south of the Avon & Kennet Canal with two distinctive spurs, or extensions to the north east and south of the town. The north eastern spur was principally formed by the military barracks on the outskirts of the town along the London Road. During the mid to late 20th Century the principal areas of growth were north eastwards and southwards. The north eastern spur occupied the former Prince Maurice and Le Marchant Military Barracks. The AONB was designated in 1972. The AONB boundary steps back in to the Pewsey Vale, in and around the north eastern spur of the town so as to avoid the north eastern spur of the town formed primarily by the Horton Road industrial area. This south facing ridge is critical in the setting of the town of Devizes and views from the hill are expansive over the town and the wider area. E tchilhampton Hill forms the visual envelope to the south of the A290 B part of the vale and while its function in the setting of the town is less critical it is still a prominent and attractive feature in the wider land- scape. Hopton Park I ndustrial Est ate is a visually prominent and incongruous C element within the wider landscape. The large white buildings are out of scale and proportion with those around it and its unsympathetic j unction with the countryside edge and the AONB detracts from the attractive wider view. B Etchilhampton Hill The communication masts on the top of the hill adj acent to G ypsy Patch D are clearly visible in the wider landscape, reinforcing the observation that any residential development ion this hill area would be similarly prominent.
