SMATHERS LIBRARIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA Inaugural MICHAEL GANNON Lecture Featured Author Jon Meacham he inaugural Michael Gannon Lecture featuring author Jon Meacham was held April 13, 2021 with T50 guests in attendance in Smathers Library and over 400 virtual attendees. The annual Michael Gannon Lecture commemorates the achievements and scholarship of Dr. Gannon, Distinguished Service Professor, remembered at the University of Florida as an outstanding teacher and scholar, an advocate for fairness and academic integrity, and a nationally known writer on Florida history and the history of World War II. Gannon’s career encompassed work as a broadcaster and author, a priest in the Catholic Church, a professor of religion, ethics and history, and a leader in promoting the history of Florida to both academics and the public. Mack, a former U.S. Senator, a crusader against cancer and a dedicated father, has had many titles throughout his life and career, but his title of choice remains: citizen. NEWS FROM THE SOURCE 3 TREASURES from the LI The Tim Lawrence Collection The Department of Special and Area Studies Collections recently acquired the extensive collection of papers and artifacts of the late motion picture and television special effects artist Tim Lawrence (1958-2019) as a gift-in kind donation from his life partner, Catherine Carey, Education Programs Coordinator for the Florida Museum of Natural History, with the blessings of the Lawrence family. Mr. Lawrence was the founding member of IMAGIMATION, a creature fabrication, animation and special effects group in his hometown of Jacksonville. He had an extensive career in Hollywood as an actor, artist, puppeteer, make-up and special ABOVE: Ghostbusters II, effects artist, including concept sculptor for Jurassic 1989 Park, character design for the Shrek franchise, roles in Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters 1 and 2, Gremlins 2, Harry LEFT: Harry and the Hendersons, Howard the Duck, Starman, and the Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and many more. This Hendersons, 1987 impressive research collection will be housed in the Popular Culture Collections.
