On This Date November 23, 1926 Born on November 23, 1926, in Somerville, Massachusetts, Charlie Osgood makes his major league debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 18, 1944, just two weeks after being named to the Boston Herald’s All-Scholastic Baseball Team and only one week after graduating from Somer- ville High School. The fifth-youngest of 153 players to make their major league debuts in 1944, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound right-hander follows Cal McLish and Ralph Branca at the start of the fourth inning in a 6-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Shibe Park. In three innings, Osgood, the nephew of Dodger scout Clyde Sukeforth, allows the Phil- lies one run (earned) on two hits, three walks and one hit batter (Ray Hamrick), in his only major league appearance. On June 26, the Dodgers option Osgood to Newport News of the Piedmont (B) League, where he is 1-2 with a 3.81 ERA in four appearances. In his Newport News debut, Osgood pitches a six-hit, 3-1 complete game win over the Richmond Colts. On August 5, Osgood is promoted to the International (AA) League’s Montreal Roy- als. On August 21, he is exchanged by the Dodgers to the Trenton Packers of the Interstate (B) League for pitcher Bill Tart. Finishing his brief pro baseball career in 1947 with the Lumberton Cubs of the Tobacco State (D) League, Osgood begins a new career in 1948, playing for the Hartford Pros in the professional New England Pro (football) Conference. Osgood, whose older brother Bobby played three years of minor league baseball (1946-1948), dies on January 23, 2014, at the age of 87 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. ©DiamondsintheDusk.com.
