Somehow the season has flown by and we’re at the last game of the season. Where on earth did that time go? Last Saturday at Haslam, we had Sponsors Day in the top bar. It might have been the cold weather, or maybe the egg sandwiches that Jack made up, but whatever it was, we were a bit low on numbers compared to previous years. Never the less, those that did come along enjoyed plenty of free drinks and the eggs sandwiches were actually quite tasty. We also celebrated 50 years since the Club first two premierships on Saturday. The A and B grade team from the 1967 A and B grade flags got together on Saturday night for a dinner at The Robin Hood Hotel. It was a great night with all but 2 of the premiership players in attendance, only due to them no longer being with us. A big thank you to Richard Keene who rallied the troops and organising the night with the Hood. A very well organise evening and a fantastic effort by Richard to get such a great turnout. On the field last weekend; it wasn’t a bad day with the Bs and Cs coming away with solid wins over Scotch. The C grade had a tight game that finished up just in time as the sun light was quickly disappearing. And for those who remember the poor quality of lights at Haslam oval from their playing days..... well the quality hasn’t really improved much. The A grade had a hard fought close loss with Scotch OC who were sitting level with us on the table. This lose sees us sitting on the bottom of the ladder and looking like heading back down to Div 3 in 2018. There is a slim chance however that we could stay up in Div 2. If we win tomorrow, and Scotch OC and Broadview lose, we will stay up because we have a higher percentage. So it would be great to see plenty of Kings supporters out at tomorrows game to cheer on the boys. This Saturday August 19th versus Sacred Heart OC: C-grade 10:15pm at Sacred Heart College B-grade 12:15pm at Sacred Heart College A-grade 2:15pm at Sacred Heart College We’re looking forward to seeing plenty of Kings supporters at Sacred Heart this weekend. The match against Scotch was almost a Grand Final for both teams, as we were both looking to climb out of the bottom two on the ladder. Things were tight all game but we let ourselves down with poor decision-making and ball use at times, and we failed to take our chances in front of goal too often. With one game to play, we are still a chance to remain in Division 2 with a win (and the two teams above us losing), however it would be nice just to sing the song for the first time in close to three months, regardless of what the future holds. Bentley Scotch OC 3.2-20 3.2-20 5.5-35 7.7-49 For the first time this year, BKings won two on the trot as we overpowered Scotch & as a bonus leapfrogged them on the ladder to now sit in 8th, which although not terrific is better than sitting in 10th where we were 2 weeks ago. It was a much better effort across the board than last time we played Scotch, with plenty of run from behind that set up ample opportunities for the forwards to kick a winning score. The only real disappointing aspect was our finishing in front of the goals, we should have had them out of the game much earlier than we did. Fish* continued his form of late, dominating in tight & providing plenty of run; maybe just give a few handballs a bit earlier please. The big Duhne** donned my old boots & instantly his dukes were clean & taps spot on which Fish & the other midfielders lapped up. Pig*** continues to impress at half back & provide plenty of rebound, with Simmo**** also showing his class & pace through the midfield. Finally BustaB our captain for the year has played a different role this year up forward & despite the bubble wrap dulling his powerful right kick, which of late has been very accurate (just not his week), his hands & leading was very good , which provided space & opportunities for those around to contribute on the score board. BKings face the 2nd place SHOC in the final game of the year for us. It is a dead rubber for them as they can’t improve or lose their position on the ladder, so potentially the only good that may come out of a game against BKings is no injuries as they prepare for finals. So we will go in hard at ball & player & see if they really want to be out there as we play out the last game for season 2018. *Michael Fischer **Liam Duhne *** Neville Smith ****Nick Simmons *****Nick Bentley Jim Pinkney B grade Coach -7- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday August 18th 2017 Round 18 - Sacred Heart Away ROUND 17 VS C GRADE REPORT Goal Kickers - Best Players Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 A. McFarlane Pembroke Kings 0.0-0 0.0-0 0.0-0 9.10-64 Scotch OC 0.0-0 0.0-0 0.0-0 2.7-19 Once again in a momentous showdown versus our ach rivals in Scotch, the LitGrade boys took the twilight time spot for the occasion. From the first bounce, there was plenty of zest in the contest – the levels of physicality and sledging were considerably high and so too was our attack on the football. The umpires had little tolerance for undisciplined conduct; dishing out 25m penalties like they would candy canes at Christmas time. It was quite the spectacle, as we were all left scratching our heads at one back-to-back- to-back-to-back 25m penalty awarded our way. We moved the ball well and maintained a higher level of discipline than Scotch, which saw several cheap free kicks awarded our way which proved to be valuable early on. A few notable inclusions were Karen Green and Alex Breda, both of whom were prolific around the contest and played exceptional games. The twin towers in Worrall and Todd Bevan were instrumental targets up forward, whilst Stevo and Matty Scarlett aka Brad Warren ran the show down back. A very pleasing win to be a part of – we will be hungry to back it up for our final game of the season v Sacred Heart this week.
