In the past The Parish of Greater Whitbourne we have focused on the church buildings and the cost of ministry because these are the things important to local people. But by doing this we have perhaps lost sight of the bigger picture Christian giving is after all an act of love. The principle of stewardship is closely linked to the concept of grace: everything comes from God as a gift and is to be administered faithfully on his behalf. There is both stewardship of the earth and stewardship of the gospel message. Our interna - tional consciousness of the relationship between ecological damage and political exploitation of the poor has made us all look for a more sustainable future. In our own country, Christians have been very concerned about the levels of unemployment and technological change in industry. Stewardship of the gospel is about the way Christians live their lives, how they use their per - sonal resources of time, money and talents to help others in society. It raises questions about mission, personal and corporate lifestyle. One of my favorite stories about stewardship is the story of King David building the temple in the book of Chronicles. In the story, King David leads from the front, offering his own personal wealth to the building of the temple. The gifts David invited were for the Temple of God, not a house for mortals. It was a big vision, a bold one. When talking about the building of the temple, he was willing to take risks in faith. The goal of Christian giving is not the sur - vival of a struggling institution or an embarrassed plea for more money.
