They proposed, in their Charter of 1838, "To educate youth of all classes without any regard to the distinction of religious denominations, and thereby to promote the more general diffusion of knowledge and virtue." Implicit in their statement of more than a century ago was a concern for the basic values of both Christianity and democracy, values still cherished by their spiritual heirs. Davidson is a particular kind of college. It is a liberal arts college rather than a university or vocational school.
