The clerk will call 4 the roll. 5 THE CLERK: Senator Duncan. 6 CHAIRMAN DUNCAN: Here. 7 THE CLERK: Senator Gallegos. 8 SENATOR GALLEGOS: Here. 9 THE CLERK: Senator Averitt. 10 SENATOR AVERITT: Here. 11 THE CLERK: Senator Harris. 12 SENATOR HARRIS: Here. 13 THE CLERK: Senator West. 14 SENATOR WEST: Here. 15 THE CLERK: We have five. 16 CHAIRMAN DUNCAN: We have five members 17 present, which establishes a quorum so the Committee 18 will be in order to be -- to take testimony on 19 senate -- or on the congressional redistricting. 20 First of all, let me start off by telling 21 each and every one of you how pleased we are to be here 22 to hear our testimony and we have -- this is our sixth 23 appearance across the state and we're getting pretty 24 good at conducting these meetings. And I think you'll 25 find that you'll have an attentive audience up here on STOVALL REPORTING & VIDEO, LLC (972) 221-0331 July 8, 2003 Redistricting Hearing 7 1 the panel. I think you'll find that we'll be courteous 2 to you and we hope that you can be courteous to us as 3 well. 4 We do have a few things that we need to 5 do by way of housekeeping before we get started. The 6 first thing is we have an interpreter here today, and 7 if the interpreter could approach. I think. We'll see 8 staff -- we'll cover that in just a minute. Apparently 9 the interpreter is not here yet. 10 The testimony today will be taken by all 11 of -- will be taken by a court reporter, so all of your 12 testimony will be typed up and be submitted to the 13 Committee. We will have the testimony for the Senate 14 and House if they want to look at it as well, available 15 for review. We've ordered quick transcript so that we 16 will have those transcripts when we go back to Austin. 17 For your information, we have held 18 hearings in Laredo, Texas; San Angelo, Texas; McAllen, 19 Texas; Houston, Texas; Corpus Christi. Today we're in 20 Dallas and tomorrow we'll be in Waco and that will 21 conclude our regional hearings. On behalf of the Senate Jurisprudence 2 Committee I want to thank all of you for taking the 3 time to come here today to share your views with us. 4 Governor Perry has called the Texas 5 legislature into special session to consider 6 congressional redistricting. This is not a simple or 7 casual task and it's one that we know people have 8 strong feelings about. We want to hear what your views 9 are
