Lab Safety We will be doing a lot of labs together this year, so it is important that you know how to act appropriately. You are not to touch equipment until given proper instructions & permission by the teacher. Work areas should be kept clear of books & backpacks. Also, keep your hands away from your face during laboratory work. Right before leaving the lab area, you should thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Students wearing short skirts, shorts, sandals, and/or open- toed shoes may be restricted from laboratory work. Our lab is equipped with specialized safety equipment for use in general & emergency situations. You are responsible for knowing the location, function & safe operation of each. Never heat chipped or cracked glassware. Never handle broken glassware with bare hands. Broken pieces should be swept up using a broom & dustpan and placed in the designated broken glass container. Safety Equipment Goggles: always wear when working with heat, when working with chemicals, and when working with sharp objects. Apron: wear to protect your clothing. Heat-resistant gloves: wear when working with hot objects. Safety Equipment Fire blanket: use if a person’s hair or clothes catch on fire. Fire extinguisher: use when the fire is contained to a small area (such as a wastebasket or on top of a lab table). NEVER use on a person!!!
