Vice President meets with ‘National Bravery Award-2010’ Winner Children By : INVC Team Published On : 22 Jan, 2011 12:01 AM IST Ratnam Chandra,, INVC,, Delhi,, The Vice President of India Shri M..Hamid Ansari met with the children who have been conferred the ‘National Bravery Award- 2010’ at a function here today. He interacted with the brave children and their parents and encouraged them for their valour acts. The children shared with him their acts of bravery. He wished the brave children the grand success in their lives. Twenty three children including eight children from North-Eastern states have been selected for the Awards and two of them have been given posthumously. The prestigious Geeta Chopra Award has been conferred on 13 year old Km. Jismi P.M. of Kerala who saved two children from drowning. The Sanjay Chopra Award has been given to 11 year old Master Priyanshu Joshi of Uttarakhand who saved his sister from a leopard. The Awardees will participate in the Republic Day parade. The awardees will be granted financial assistance until they complete their school education under a sponsorship programme of the Council. Financial assistance is provided by some State Governments also. ICCW provides financial assistance under its ‘Indira Gandhi Scholarship Scheme’ to those children who undertake professional courses such as engineering and medicine. For other children, this assistance is provided till they complete their graduation. The Government of India has reserved some seats for the awardee children in medical and engineering colleges and polytechnics. These awards were initiated in 1957. The selection for bravery awards were made by a high powered committee comprising representatives of various ministries/departments, non- governmental organizations as well as senior members of Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW).
