Top quality pens were once again in abundance with 21 pens at or about £200/head. The pre sale show judged by David Fenwick & Susie Malkinson, Gainsborough proved a chal- lenging task, the champion prize eventually awarded to Brian Lawson of Westhouse which later sold at £230/ head to Frankland Farms who also bought Brian’s second pen at £220. Plenty of notable consignments with Chris & Tessa Hewitt topping the sale at £290 with other pens at £230, £210, £205 & £200; Messrs Ward & Robinson, Intack farm at £250, £230, £215 & £200; Phillip & Denis Elliott £230, £220 x 2, £210; Fox Farms £215 & £202. A sol- id trade throughout which if anything went slightly dearer as the sale progressed. Best Pen of 10 Masham Shearlings Judge: Chris Gibson & Matthew Berry st FROM PRICE 1 prize Masham shearlings from JM Jackson 1st JM Jackson £200 2nd FW Graham £170 3rd Rowland & Woodward £175 MASHAMS Auctioneer’s Report: (Stephen Dennis): An unprecedented trade for Masham shearlings with many regular buyers leaving empty handed. The new Challenge Trophy presented by Miss Joan Jackson returned home with her on as she took 1st prize and selling for £200/ head to Les Thackray. A cracking run of shearlings from Rowland & Woodward created plenty of interest and topped at £175 for their 3rd prize pen with their next four pens all making £165. An overall sale average of £156.40 reflecting strong demand throughout. CHEVIOT MULES Auctioneer’s Report: (Stephen Dennis): Demand for the Cheviot Mule shearlings was as expected very strong with purchasers the breadth of the country from Lincolnshire to Shropshire. Ross Bros of Fraserburgh topped the section at £190 whilst a fine run of strong sheep from John Wilson of Kendal sold either side of £185. Best Pen of 10 CTL Shearlings CTL Auctioneer’s Report: (Greg Judge: Michael & Max Wynne MacDougall): CTL and Suffolk shear- lings continue to prove popular with FROM PRICE huge demand for all types. 3/4 and st 1 TJ Jackson £240 pure bred sorts certainly easiest to 2nd TJ Jackson £260 cash with JT & J Kelsall, Summerlands 3rd RJ & J Towers £230 topping the day’s trading at £750. J Robinson followed with his run selling at £650 x 2. TJ Jackson, Gt Eccleston once again took first prize with his pen of 10 realising £240 with his next pen to £260. The strongest of the Texel x Mules in general sold between £160-£170 with the next draw down £140-£150. Suffolks in short supply with two pens of Suff x HB from Ross Bros, Strichen to £200 with Suffolk Mule to £160 from J Turner, Drayton. With the weather taking a better turn, a smaller ringside of buyers were in attendance. Trade however was not affected with all classes of lambs meeting another strong trade and mules dearer on the week. The days sale topped at £90 for Texels from T Crick, Beach Farm. A pen of 32 strong Scotch Mules from first time vendor S Percival, Stoke on Trent were close behind at £88. Stronger lambs and nicer Beltex types £75-£85. Medium sort lambs £65-£72 with long keep lambs selling around £60-£63. Hill bred lambs included Texdale lambs and Cheviot x in general £55-£60 looking nicely sold. Chris Brown, Lane House showed a strong pen of Cheviots to £70 with Cheviot Mules to £69 from M Ratcliffe. Nearly 1000 Mules in the entry with all classes dearer. Stronger pens £68-£74 with the next cut down £64-£65. Small lambs £60-£62. Horned lambs to £73 for SBF from A Kirby, Kirkby Stephen. Next sale Tuesday 15th September. Entries invited. A great show of females was once again on offer from all four vendors, all of which were easily sold. Stewart Currie of the Beautry Flock got the night off to a start with Texel Shearling ewes to £400. MJ & RE Davis as usual had a useful entry of females to £680 fol- lowed at £650 x 2. The more commercial end selling between £300-£400. Dutch Texels proving ever popu- lar topped at £620 again from the Rathbone flock. Rams proved harder to cash although a decent clear- ance rate was achieved. Procters Farm Ltd showing at this sale for the first time sold Texels to £800 on sev- eral occasions. Beltex from the same home sold to £700. The Davis family’s run sold on the whole from £400-£580. A real quality Dutch ram from Rathbone met with plenty of interest and was purchased for £1000 by regular supporter of the sale and breed , Sam Stables of Herefordshire. Stewart Currie made £700 of his best which stopped locally with Andrew Haggas. Included in the night’s sale was the complete dispersal of Wannops cross bred sheep. Successful with both prime lambs and breeding sheep, this run attracted plenty of attention. Shearlings topped at £450 twice with several others making £400.
