Twelfth Grade Flag Football Study Guide Scoring: Touchdown = 6 points Extra Point = 1 point Field Goal = 3 points Safety = 2 points Conversion after touchdown (Pass the Ball) = 2 points Terms: OFFENSE = Team with the Ball trying to score points DEFENSE = Team without the Ball trying to stop the offense from scoring LINE OF SCRIMMAGE = Imaginary line that runs from sideline to sideline. It is where you place or put the ball at the end of each play. • If the offense or defense cross the line of scrimmage (LOS) Before the Ball is snapped or hiked it is offside. • A 5-yard penalty would Be assessed to the team that was offside. INCOMPLETE PASS = When the receiver does not gain control or possession of the football and drops the pass. • An incomplete pass is also when the quarterBack over throws or under throws the receiver. • The Ball goes Back to the LOS on incomplete pass. FUMBLE = When the receiver or running Back has possession of the footBall, takes 1 or more steps with the football then drops the ball. • ALL FUMBLES ARE DEAD BALLS!!! The ball is marked at the spot where it hit the ground. MUFF = A MUFF is when a punt returner or kickoff returner lets the Ball go through their arms and hit the ground. The player is NOT allowed to pick up the muffed Ball and advance it. • A MUFF is a dead ball. • If the returner gains possession of the punt and then drops the ball, it is a fumble. The ball will be spotted where it hit the ground. SHOT GUN = The formation where the quarterBack will stand 3 to 5 yards behind the center. • If the ball does not reach the quarter back on the snap, the quarterback will get one chance to pick up the ball and play. If the quarterback can not pick up the ball then it will be considered a fumble and spotted where they attempted to pick up the Ball. • If the quarterback has possession of the footBall and drops it, it is a fumble and considered a dead Ball. Game Play: Coin Toss: At the Beginning of the game, a coin toss will Be held with the winner getting his/her choice of goal or ball possession. The loser of the toss will have the option at the beginning of the second half. Ball in Play: The ball shall be put into play at the beginning of the game, half, after a touchdown, and if the offense fails to make first down. The ball is put into play on the five (5) yard line with 1st and zone to gain. Huddle: After the official marks the Ball ready for play, the offense will have 25 seconds to put the Ball into play or Be penalized 5 yards for delay of game. Motion: A player must Be going parallel to or away from the line of scrimmage to Be legally in motion. Offside: If either the offense or the defense enters the neutral zone after the Ball has Been marked ready for play, they are offside. The penalty is 5 yards. Zone to Gain (First Down): A team will Be allowed four (4) downs to advance the Ball from one zone to the next. If after four (4) downs, a team has failed to advance the Ball into the next zone, possession shall go to the defense at the five-yard line going the other way. Stances: No 3 or 4point stance allowed. Line of Scrimmage (LOS): The offensive team must have all players on the line of scrimmage at the snap except for the quarterback. The defense has no maximum or minimum. Passing: There can Be only one (1) forward pass per down. A direct or a BoBBled, But complete, hand- off shall not be considered a forward pass. Receiving: All players of Both teams are eligiBle pass receivers. Pulling the flags: The Ball carrier is down and the Ball is dead when the flag Belt is detached from the player’s body or when any part of the ball carrier’s body (other than the hands or feet) touches the ground. Ball Carrier: Must avoiding contact, but they can spin or jump. The ball carrier cannot obstruct defender from pulling their flag, including the STIFF-ARM. The penalty is yards 5 yards from the previous spot. The Center Snap: The center snap must Be one continuous motion. The snap must start from ground and then tossed up to quarterback. Fumble: Is a dead ball and cannot be advanced by the offense or defense. Once ball touches the ground play is over. There is no stripping the Ball from a player. Defense: Can rush quarterback after counting out loud to 5 Mississippi. If you do not count out loud you cannot rush. Once a defensive player crosses line of scrimmage the quarterBack can run with the ball. Blitzing: The defense gets one blitzes when offense is in each zone, which equals two blitzes total per offensive series. On a blitz you do not have to count to 5 Mississippi. Penalties: All penalties will result in a lost or gain of 5 yards and the captain must choice to take the penalty or decline the penalty. Only the team captain can make the final decision. Teacher can and will have you sit out if it looks like the game or a player is getting out of control and not putting safety first. 1. Pushing, shoving, or any physical contact that is inappropriate for class. 3. Tackling 4. Any act which could cause injury 5. Any un-sportsmanship-like conduct including aBusive language Field Markings: A = Goal line to end line (End Zone)-10 yards B = Sideline to Sideline – 53 1/3 yards C = Goal line to Goal line – 100 yards .
