Clinic physi- cians work collaboratively to provide the full spectrum of healthcare services from primary care to more than 30 different specialty medical services. Sansum doctors care for over 150,000 patients at their 20 patient care facilities located between Carpinteria and Santa Maria. Serving patients for 91 years, Sansum Clinic has introduced many new procedures and programs, ranging from renal dialysis to digital mammography. In addition to serving its own patients, Sansum Clinic offers free colonosco- pies, free mammograms and other free cancer diagnostic and screening services to the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics that treat those that otherwise can- not afford such services. The non-profit Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, under the leadership of Rick Scott, its president, has 10 affiliated physicians and a wide range of clinical and technical specialists who serve more than 5,000 patients each year. The Cancer Center specializes in outpatient cancer care in three areas: Radiation Oncology, Hematology-Medical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, and has been serving local cancer patients and their families for 63 years. Why Affiliate? Most importantly, the two organizations share the same cultures and value sys- tems, including a commitment to improve access to world-class cancer care. Both non-profit organizations offer overlapping cancer diagnostics and chemotherapy programs. Sansum already refers patients to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara for radiation therapies and nuclear medicine, and the Cancer Center has been sending patients to Sansum for cancer surgery and other services. Eliminating duplicate diagnostic equipment and services will free up more funding for invest- ment in new cutting edge technology. The resulting integrated services should provide better cancer care for the patient and better care for the community. Cancer Center of Santa Barbara will have immediate access to Sansum’s highly sophisticated and patient-oriented electronic medical record system, called EPIC, which provides two-way confidential communication between doctors and “Summer Shimmer” patients, shortens communication response times and reduces the flow of dupli- cate records. When doctors have their patients’ entire medical histories at their fingertips, treatments can be managed more efficiently at a lower cost. The affiliation will result in no immediately visible changes in service for existing cancer patients of either Cancer Center of Santa Barbara or of Sansum Clinic. Patients will still go to their regular doctors in the same buildings they are accustomed to visiting. Local independent physicians who refer patients to the Cancer Center will still remain in control of their patients’ cancer care, including the selection of specialists in the community who become part of the patients’ multi-care team. Physician Recruitment The key to continued high-quality healthcare in Santa Barbara lies in this community’s ability to recruit the best and the brightest physicians while com- peting with Cedars-Sinai, Scripps, the Palo Alto Clinic and other renowned multi-specialty clinics. Recent residency and fellowship graduates of the world’s best medical schools are generally attracted to the “clinic experience” with its established base of patients, an opportunity to rub brains with a large number of professional colleagues,
