The Importance of Bian Zheng (Pattern Differentiation) in TCVM

Pearls from TCVM Practice The Importance of Bian Zheng (Pattern Differentiation) in TCVM Bruce Ferguson, DVM, MS ABSTRACT Bian Zheng is a system of Pattern Differentiation unique to TCVM used to make a TCVM diagnosis. Bian Zheng is not equivalent to a Western Biomedical diagnosis. A canine clinical case of inflammatory bowel disease is used as an example of differentiating between Bian Zheng and Western Biomedical diagnosis. Treating a disease which was non-responsive to conventional Western therapy on the basis of Bian Zheng led to a complete resolution of clinical signs and a positive outcome. The approach to making the correct Bian Zheng is discussed. Key words: Bian Zheng, Chinese disease pattern differentiation Bian Zheng, translated as Pattern salient point is that TCVM is a reliable, internally Differentiation, is at the core of diagnosis and consistent medical system that is successfully used treatment in all of Traditional Chinese Veterinary to treat a Bian Zheng. TCVM should not be used as Medicine (TCVM), but particularly herbal a “natural” alternative to a western biomedical medicine and food therapy.
