Projects approved in the first two program callas have been completed during 2013, in which 49 research groups (85 % of the groups that make up CIBERNED) have been involved, along with a dozen external associated partner, and we have seen how the projects have been successfully completed, where more than one group of CIBERNED have participated. The success of this program has continued this year with the resolution of the third call for collaborative projects and the approval of 5 new biennial projects with the participation of 21 groups CIBERNED and an external partner group. In total, all three calls launched so far in the cooperative program are allowed active involvement in such projects of 55 out of the 58 groups that make up CIBERNED (95%). This has led to increase the number of collaborative publications of high impact, a feature that is supposed to have a center like ours. As a consequence of the work by our groups, a total of 572 papers have been published, with a global impact factor of 2,741.12 and a mean impact factor of 5.51. Moreover, a new clinical guideline has been published and 13 clinical trials have been active during 2013. This represents the consolidation of the historical trend observed since the establishment of the Center towards an increased scientific productivity, not only in quantitative terms but particularly in qualitative terms, especially highlighting the significant increase in international collaborative publications as well as the traslational approach. We have had several meetings and collaborations with other CIBERs and we intend to keep increasing these relations through the newly created InterCIBER program from the Institute of Health Carlos III. On the other hand, we are strengthening our collaboration with CIEN Foundation, with which we share management and administration, and the Reina Sofia Foundation. Our aim is to cover the different types of research in neurodegeneration, from basic approaches, using simple models systems to monitoring of neurodegenerative processes in humans. As regards to the strengthening of the CIBERNED-CIEN Foundation -Reina Sofia Foundation association, a major development worth mentioning has been the combination of the 7th CIBERNED Scientific Forum, that used to bring together each year the over 500 researchers that constitute the CIBERNED, with the IX International Symposium on Advances in Alzheimer’s disease, which annually promoted the Reina Sofia Foundation and CIEN Foundation. Thus, on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day celebrated on September 21, the First International Congress for Research and Innovation in Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIIIEN) was held in Madrid, a format which is to be maintained in the future and whose second edition is scheduled to be held in Barcelona in September 2014. It is also worth noting that CIBERNED has joined the Technical Committee of the Strategy in Neurodegenerative Diseases of the National Health System, launched by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality. With regard to international relations, this year CIBERNED continued to participate very actively in the activities of the JPND Joint Programme and the Network of Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration COEN. In particular, we participated in the call for international collaborative projects “Pathfinder”, in which applications from CIBERNED groups were considered of high level (by which we have been specially commended by the Call Evaluation Committee), having had a high success rate as a result. Of the five applications approved (out of 18), three involve CIBERNED groups, representing a success rate of 37.5 %. In addition, in 2013 CIBERNED has made a significant effort to finance with funds from its own budget the project call for European Joint Programme JPND, thus demonstrating our responsibility and interest in maintaining international relations and commitments in this field. The resolution of this call resulted in the approval of a project involving CIBERNED. Finally, I wanted to express my gratitude and appreciation to the research community that make CIBERNED, whose work, dedication and talent have made this center a national and international reference for research in neurodegenerative diseases. We hope that the incipient economic upturn will allow us in rather short term to have the resources needed to continue progressing and consolidating this leading position through the incorporation of new groups and strengthening the existing structure, looking for synergies, bringing new ideas and renewing excitement, while we renew our commitment to quality research for the benefit of all those directly or indirectly affected by these diseases. Jesús Ávila de Grado Scientific Director 2013 Annual Report 3 OVERVIEW The Center for Biomedical Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIBERNED) emerges in 2006 as heir to the Center for Research in Neurological Diseases (CIEN), which together with the CNIO, CNIC or CNMVIS constituted the four centers whose mission is to combat the most prevalent health problems of Spanish society: cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases and neurodegeneration. As for the other centers, a supporting foundation called CIEN Foundation was created in 2003 as the CIEN’s management authority, although unlike the other centers, it was created as the first Network Center in Spain, eventually being renamed as CIBERNED. Both CIEN and CIEN Foundation partnered with the Queen Sofia Foundation in creating the Alzheimer Center, located in Vallecas (Madrid) and where CIEN Foundation is headquartered since 2007. Currently, the CIBERNED-CIEN Foundation partnership is the only research center in Spain (and one of the few in the world) integrated into the international network of Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (CoEN), an initiative arising from the European Union Joint Programme for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND). This joint program constitutes an innovative collaborative research initiative created to address the growing challenges posed by this group of diseases. Its goal is to boost the impact of research by aligning existing national research programs and identifying the common objectives whose scope would benefit through joint action. CIBERNED is born with the idea of creating a Center for Translational Research, with a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional philosophy in which basic, clinical and population are integrated in order to develop a single joint research program, focusing on certain diseases of great importance for the National Health System that either for its prevalence or because of its social impact, are considered strategic. The genesis of CIBERNED was conducted through a coordination research strategy of
