He trained at the Architectural Association in London, and his architectural practice of 35 years, LLA Arkitek, has consistently delivered highly commended projects related to both new-build designs and as well as building conservation and planning. Best-practice exemplars include the restoration and adaptive reuse of the world-renowned Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Penang, which received a 2000 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence, and the restoration of Merdeka Stadium (Independence Stadium) in Kuala Lumpur, the recipient of a 2008 UNESCO Award of Excellence. He has been the President and Deputy President of Badan Warisan Malaysia (Heritage of Malaysia Trust), Malaysia’s national-level quasi-governmental organisation in heritage conservation, and technical advisor to the Penang Heritage Trust. In parallel with his architectural work, Prof. Loh also devotes time to education. He teaches annually at the University of Hong Kong, where he is an Adjunct Professor, and at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property in Rome. He is a UNESCO World Heritage Site evaluator and a Heritage Awards judge and technical consultant.
