ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 61 By: Leftwich, Adelson, Aldridge, Anderson, Barrington, Bass, Branan, Brogdon, Cain, Capps, Coates, Coffee, Corn, Crain, Crutchfield, Easley, Eason McIntyre, Fisher, Ford, Garrison, Gumm, Harrison, Hobson, Johnson (Constance), Johnson (Mike), Jolley, Justice, Lamb, Laster, Laughlin, Lawler, Lerblance, Mazzei, Morgan, Myers, Nichols, Paddack, Pruitt, Rabon, Reynolds, Riley, Shurden, Taylor, Wilcoxson, Williamson, Wilson and Wyrick A Resolution praising Michael Huff, for his 2006 Rose Bowl performance; commending him upon his selection as the 2005 Jim Thorpe Award winner; and directing distribution. WHEREAS, Michael Wayne Huff, II, was born March 6, 1983, in Irving, Texas. He attended Nimitz High School where he was a star athlete in football, track and field; and WHEREAS, a fifth year senior, Michael Huff has started all but one game in the last four seasons for the University of Texas Longhorn football team. Besides football, he has excelled at track, winning honors during his junior year. Last season he anchored one of the best defenses in the history of the University of Texas Longhorns football team; and WHEREAS, Michael Huff has been named a first-team All American by the Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America, the Walter Camp Football Foundation, and the American Football Coaches Association. He is the first player from the University of Texas to be selected as a recipient of the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in college football. The award ceremony will be held February 7, 2006; and WHEREAS, Michael Huff, a solid scholar, has appeared on the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll, the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, and has been selected as the Toyota Scholar Athlete of the Week. A Youth and Community Studies major, he has been active in his school’s community service program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 50TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE: THAT the Oklahoma State Senate praises University of Texas defensive back Michael Huff for his performance during the 2006 Rose Bowl game (especially falling on a loose ball on the second play of the second quarter), which was instrumental in defeating the number- one-ranked University of Southern California Trojans 41-38 and winning the national championship for the University of Texas Longhorns. THAT the Oklahoma State Senate commends Michael Huff of the University of Texas upon his selection as the winner of the 2005 Jim Thorpe Award as the best college defensive back in the nation. THAT a copy of this resolution be distributed to Michael Huff and the Jim Thorpe Association. Adopted by the Senate the 7th day of February, 2006. Presiding Officer of the Senate ENR. S. R.
